Cowboys Drop First Road Match Of The Season
April 01, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad dropped its first road match of the season on Friday against No. 24 Tulsa, 4-1, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The loss puts the Pokes at 16-3 on the season as they get ready to start Big 12 play next week against Texas and TCU. All three losses this year have come against a ranked opponent, two of them being in the top 25.
"It was a tough loss because we know we had a chance to win," junior Arjun Kadhe said. "We fought really hard, but ultimately came up just short in the end."
To start the match, Cowboy duo Tristan Meraut/Nathan Roper couldn't get any momentum going on court two as they fell to Tulsa's Dominic Bechard/Dylan McCloskey, 6-2.
Playing for the first time since October, Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza didn't show any signs of rust on court one. The OSU duo defeated Tulsa's Matthew Kirby/Okkie Kellerman, 6-3.
With the doubles point on the line, Cowboys Kadhe/Mateo Ruiz looked to make their doubles debut a memorable one, but couldn't get past Majed Kilani/Carlos Bautista, falling, 6-4.
The Golden Hurricanes (10-9; 0-1 American) would ride the momentum from doubles play with two quick victories in singles. Ruiz, playing only his second singles match of the season, couldn't get anything going in his match on court six as he lost in straight-sets to Kellerman, 6-1, 6-1
Mendoza would be the next Cowboy to fall in singles. The sophomore put up a battle in both sets before dropping his match against Kilani on court four, 6-4, 6-4, extending the Tulsa lead to 3-0.
One point away from defeat, Gerch provided a late surge from the Cowboys with an impressive three-set victory over Tulsa's Juan Matias Gonzalez, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1, to put the Pokes within two. The singles win marks Gerch's 10th-straight and puts him at 13-2 on the season.
On court one, Kadhe fed off the OSU momentum as he won the second set tiebreak to extend his match to a third set and keep the Cowboys' comeback alive.
Unfortunately, Tulsa would put an end to the late OSU surge with a three-set win from Daniel Santos who defeated Roper on court six, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-2, to give the Golden Hurricane a 4-1 win over the Cowboys.
Up next: The Pokes head to Austin, Texas for a matchup with the No. 21 Longhorns on April 8th at 6 p.m. CT, followed by a showdown with No. 2 TCU at 1 p.m. CT on April 10th.
