STILLWATER – Marlo Zoller's golden goal in the 103rd minute lifted 19th-ranked Oklahoma State to a 1-0 triumph over No. 4 Florida Sunday afternoon at Neal Patterson Stadium.
The win was OSU's first over a top-five ranked team since Oct. 14, 2007, when the Cowgirls won in overtime at fifth-ranked Missouri.
OSU improved to 3-0-0 on the season with the victory, which was also the program's first ever over Florida after dropping the first four meetings.
The Cowgirls owned a 15-8 advantage in shots in the match, while Florida (2-2-0) held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.
"That Florida team is great – the way the move the ball is phenomenal. All I can say is we beat a very good team today," said OSU head coach Colin Carmichael. "I honestly thought our kids deserved it. I thought we had the best chances. Florida had a lot of possession, which is their m.o. and it's what they're really good at, but when it came to chances, we had the better go.
"I told the girls that proud is an understatement. This group works so, so hard, and they got rewarded for it."
With a strong wind at its back, OSU dominated the attack in the opening half but couldn't find the back of the net. Four of the Cowgirls' seven shots prior to intermission were on goal.
Haley Woodard tallied a pair of near misses early on as she fired a shot just 13 seconds into the match that was saved by UF goalie Kaylan Marckese before heading a shot just over the crossbar in the third minute.
In the 10th minute, a flurry of shots by the Cowgirls could not quite yield a score. After an attempt by Julia Lenhardt was blocked, Grace Yochum's follow was saved before a third try by Hannah Webb was also kicked away.
Florida managed just two shots in the opening half, but the second half would produce more opportunity for the visitors.
Hannah Warner came off the bench to play the second half in goal and posted three saves on five shots by the Gators, including a spectacular play in the 74th minute when she leapt and tipped a header by Sarah Troccoli over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
OSU also continued to create opportunities after the break, with a shot by Jaci Jones in the 50th minute going just wide of the mark and a Woodard attempt just minutes later being blocked by a Florida defender.
Early in the second overtime, the Cowgirls would finally break through when Julia Lenhardt delivered a perfect pass to Zoller near the top of the box. Zoller took one touch before burying a shot from 12-yards out to the far right post for her first goal of the season.
OSU returns to action with its first road trip of the season this week as the Cowgirls will play at Illinois Friday night before a Sunday match at Loyola Chicago.
