Cowboy Tennis Collects a Pair of Wins in Season-Opening Doubleheader

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team opened its season with two 6-1 victories over UTRGV and Omaha on Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
With a pair of wins, OSU tallied its 18th and 19th straight opening-day victories.
Oklahoma State vs. UT Rio Grande Valley – Match 1
The Cowboys took the doubles point with a 6-1 win by Alessio Basile and Francisco Pini over Santiago Serrano and Agustin Salazar on court three and a 6-4 win from Leighton Allen and Erik Schiessl over Paolo Bonaguro and Ivo Isqueiro on court two.
On court one, the match between OSU's Tyler Zink and Alex Garcia and UTRGV's Sam Whitehead and Emilien Burnel went back and forth, but the Cowboys eventually took down the two Vaqueros in a tiebreaker, 7-6(6).
The Cowboys carried that momentum into the singles portion of the match.
In his first collegiate match, OSU's Schiessl convincingly defeated Isqueiro, 6-1, 6-1, on court four. Shortly after on court three, Basile took down Serrano, 6-4, 6-2, to extend the Cowboys' lead in the team score to 3-0.
OSU's Carl Roothman clinched the match in favor of the Cowboys with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Paolo Bonaguro on court six. Zink extended the team lead to 5-0 by taking down Emilien Burnel, 6-3, 6-3, on court one.
Cowboy Alex Garcia was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over Agustin Salazar, 7-5, 6-1, on court two to give OSU a 6-0 lead and it wasn't until the final match on court five when UTRGV claimed its only win of the day with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-0 victory from Sam Whitehead over OSU's Francisco Pini.
Oklahoma State finished the match with a record of 11-2 in singles sets and a 3-0 record in doubles, all leading to a 6-1 victory to open the season.

Oklahoma State vs. Omaha – Match 2
Following its victory over UTRGV, Oklahoma State came back later in the day to claim a 6-1 win over Omaha in which the Cowboys swept doubles play and won five singles matches in straight sets.
On doubles court one, Zink and Garcia shined once again, defeating Omaha's Bryan Kuntz and Mikhail Korkunov, 6-2. Just after that, OSU's Allen and Schiessl took down Ethan Gaubert and Gabe Whiston, 6-1, on court three. To complete the doubles dominance, Basile and Roothman defeated Mavericks, Ryoma Mishiro and Quintan Van Wijk, 6-3.
The Cowboys continued their winning ways in singles action. Schiessl took down Omaha's Kuntz, 6-0, 6-0 on court four.
Next to finish was Garcia, who capped off his day with a commanding victory over Korkunov, 6-2, 6-2 on court two. He wasn't alone in victory as Zink defeated Mishiro, 6-1, 6-3 on court one.
On court five, Francisco Pini was a straight-set winner over Omaha's Mikel Garmendia, 6-4, 6-2.
OSU finished the match with two close calls. First, Basile kept it close in the first set against Van Wijk, but had a dominating second set to secure the 7-5, 6-3, victory. To finish off the last match of the day, Allen played a hard fought match. After sweeping the first set 6-0, Allen lost the next set 1-6, and came up just short in the third set, 3-6.
