STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team fell to No. 20 Memphis, 4-2, on Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
With the loss, OSU moves to 11-3 on the 2024 campaign. The Cowboys saw their seven-match winning streak that dated back to Jan. 30 come to an end. Memphis improved to 10-3 on year.Â
"In singles, every match was a dog fight," head coach Dustin Taylor said. "The guys put it on the line, they all put it on the line, but you got to tip your hat to those guys."
The doubles point came down to the wire with a deciding tiebreak match that went the way of the Tigers.
The Cowboys got on the board first with Alessio Basile and Issac Becroft taking down Memphis' Connor Gannon and Harry Rock, 6-2. The decisive win was the eighth of the duo's season and is the most by a Cowboy pairing in 2024.
OSU's Tyler Zink and Alex Garcia played a close match, but fell to the Tiger's No. 25 ranked pairing of Pablo Alemany and Charlie Barry, 6-4. With the point up for grabs, freshmen Erik Schiessl and Goran Zgola were defeated by Memphis' Pau Fanlo and Sam Reeve in a back-and-forth match that went to a tiebreaker, 7-6(6).Â
The Cowboys had a couple of close calls in the singles portion of the match.
The action began with Basile continuing his hot start to the day with another victory, this time in singles. He took down Memphis' Moritz Kudernatsch in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, to tie up the match at one apiece.Â
The Tigers took the lead back as Alemany defeated Zink, 6-3, 6-3, on court one. Next, on court four Memphis' Maxime Dubouch defeated OSU's Francisco Pini, 6-3, 7-5.
With the match on the line, Becroft defeated Rock in a rollercoaster match, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. The win continues Becroft's perfect season as he improved to 11-0, while also moving court three to 12-0.
The Tigers clinched the match after No. 49 Garcia fell to Gannon in a tight match, 7-6(5), 6-2. Schiessl's match, heading into a third set, went unfinished after the dual was settled.Â
