Cowboy Tennis Opens Big 12 Play with Win Over BYU

PROVO, Utah – The 25th-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team opened its 2024 conference slate with a 4-2 victory over BYU on Thursday in Provo, Utah.
In a match that lasted less than two hours, OSU improved to 14-4 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys snapped BYU's 10-match winning streak and its perfect home record.
Starting with doubles, Isaac Becroft and Alessio Basile continued their dominance, snagging a quick 6-1 victory over BYU's Jack Barnett and Redd Owen. The pairing is the first to reach double-digit wins this season for the Cowboys.
Needing just one court for the doubles point, OSU's court one pairing, Alex Garcia and Tyler Zink, bested Zach Fuchs and Wally Thayne, 6-3, for the doubles point that was decided in less than 30 minutes.
In their first match as a duo, Oklahoma State's Francisco Pini and Erik Schiessl's match went unfinished, 4-4, on court three.
Moving into singles action, the Cowboys split first sets with the Cougars. Zink and Pini won closely contested first sets, 7-5, while Basile commanded a 6-3 victory in the first set.
Court two was the first to finish, seeing BYU's Thayne defeat Becroft, 6-2, 6-4, to put the Cougars on the board. It marks the first loss of the season for Becroft, as he moved to 13-1.
With the match tied at one apiece, the Cougars took the lead, claiming court four. Owen defeated OSU's Schiessl, 6-3, 6-3.
With the Pokes down 1-2, the remainder of the match finished in a span of less than 15 minutes.
Basile knocked off BYU's Tygen Goldammer on court five, 6-3, 6-4, to tie the match at two all. Less than two minutes later, Pini defeated Cougar TJ Wells, 7-5, 6-1, to tack on another team point for the Cowboys.
Minutes after that, Tyler Zink clinched the match for the Pokes. He cruised past BYU's Barnett, 7-5, 6-1. The graduate improved to 13-4 on the season and extended his winning streak to four.
The Cowboys will return to action on Saturday against Texas Tech at 2 p.m. CT in Lubbock, Texas.
