Cowboy Tennis Falls to Texas, 4-1, in Big 12 Semifinals

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team lost to Texas, 4-1, in the semifinals of the Big 12 Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Cowboys moved to 17-9 on the year. This was the second straight Big 12 semifinal appearance for OSU. Texas improved to 21-3 and advanced to play TCUÂ in the Big 12 Championship tomorrow at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The doubles portion of the match was tightly contested, featuring multiple comebacks from the Cowboys. On court two, they came out on the short end with Texas's Pierre-Yves Bailly and Eshan Talluri defeating Alex Garcia and Francisco Pini, 6-3.
The comeback began on court three where OSU's Leighton Allen and Alessio Basile continued their successful weekend with another win. This time, the Cowboy duo defeated Micah Braswell and Cleeve Harper, 6-4.Â
OSU captured the doubles point on the featured court, where the No. 15-ranked pairing of Tyler Zink and Isaac Becroft took down No. 22 Elliot Spizzirri and Siem Woldeab. The Pokes were down 5-2 and came all the way back to force a tiebreaker where they claimed the doubles point, winning 7-6(5). The top duo is now 5-0 on the season and four of their five wins have come against ranked pairings.
The doubles win marks the fifth doubles win in a row for Oklahoma State.
The Longhorns got the better of the Cowboys in singles. Starting on court three, No. 39 Gilles-Arnaud Bailly defeated No. 96 Garcia, 6-0, 6-1. Texas took the lead on court six, as Jonah Braswell took down OSU's Ty Wunderlich, 6-0, 6-1.Â
The match kept its intensity throughout with three of the six matches going into third sets. Texas kept the pressure on with another victory, this time on court one. No. 1 Spizzirri took on No. 23 Zink in a back-and-forth match that went three sets, but was eventually closed out by Spizzirri, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Needing one more to clinch, Texas claimed the victory on court four. OSU freshman Erik Schiessl played a tough match before falling to No. 86 Pierre-Yves Bailly defeated Schiessl, 7-6(4), 6-1.
With the match clinched, Becroft and Pini both went unfinished in their third sets.Â
The Cowboys will return to action on May 3 as they will start their NCAA Tournament run.
