COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 34th-ranked Oklahoma State men's tennis team defeated No. 42 Vanderbilt, 4-1, Friday morning to advance to the second round of the NCAA Championships at the Auer Tennis Complex.
It marks the second straight season that the Cowboys won a match in the NCAA Championships. OSU improved to 18-9 with the win and recorded the most victories in a season since 2019.
The postseason victory began in doubles on court one where OSU's 10th-ranked duo of Tyler Zink and Isaac Becroft took down No. 70 Nathan Cox and Jeremie Casabon, 6-2. The tandem claimed their sixth win of the season to stay undefeated with five of those coming against ranked opponents.
Following a brief rain delay, the clincher came from Cowboys Leighton Allen and Alessio Basile on court three. They defeated Hugo Coquelin and Danil Panarin, 6-3, and improved to 3-0 as a pairing. The win gave OSU its sixth straight doubles point, a streak that has lasted since March 30.
After taking the 1-0 lead, Alex Garcia and Francisco Pini went unfinished against Vanderbilt's Michael Ross and Joubert Klopper, leading 5-4 on court two.
The Cowboys started hot in singles, winning all six first sets before another weather delay brought the match at a stall. With light rain still falling, the teams went back out and Vanderbilt gained momentum. It translated to five of six second sets going in favor of the Commodores.
On court six, Coquelin defeated Pini, 6-2, 0-6, 1-6, to tie up the match at one apiece. The Cowboys took back the lead with a comeback win from Basile. Down 3-5 in the third set, he took four straight games to take the match, 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.
No. 24 Zink kept the momentum on court one and defeated No. 45 Panarin, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. This win marks Zink's team-high 17th singles win and his seventh against a ranked opponent.
On court four, Erik Schiessl, playing in the first postseason match of his career, clinched the match for the Pokes. The freshman defeated Casabon in straight sets and won the second set with a dominant tiebreaker. It's the second straight victory clinched by Schiessl, having also locked down the Cowboys' win in the Big 12 Championships against UCF.
Garcia and Becroft played tough matches but went unfinished with the match closed out.
Cowboy Tennis will return to action to face the winner of top-seeded Ohio State and Cleveland State tomorrow at 3 p.m. for a spot in the NCAA Super Regionals
