March 23, 2025 | Cowboy Baseball
SALT LAKE CITY – Oklahoma State suffered a 12-3 loss and dropped its conference series with Utah Sunday at Smith's Ballpark.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 11-10 overall and 1-3 in the Big 12, while the Utes are now 13-9 and 2-4 in the league.
Brayden Smith, Colin Brueggemann and Drew Culbertson all had multiple hits for the Pokes, and Beau Sylvester homered.
Ryan Ure took the loss on the mound as he lasted just 1/3 of an inning and fell to 1-2; the Cowboys used six pitchers in the contest and allowed eight unearned runs.
Utah took the game's initial lead in the first inning. Ure retired the first batter he faced but then issued three-straight walks to end his day on the mound. Noah Wech came out of the bullpen and got a ground ball the resulted in a fielder's choice and a run scored.
The Utes would double their lead in the third, getting an RBI single from Cameron Gurney to go up, 2-0.
OSU rallied for its first run in the fifth. Culbertson led off the frame with a double, and two batters later, Smith's RBI single made the score 2-1.
But the home team answered in the bottom of the inning, striking for seven unearned runs. A throwing error got things started, putting a runner at second with no outs, and Kaden Carpenter followed with an RBI double to give the Utes a 3-1 advantage. Three consecutive RBI singles with two outs would extend the lead to five before a three-run home run made it 9-1.
In the sixth, the Cowboys got a two-run homer from Sylvester, his first round-tripper of the season, to cut their deficit to 9-3.
OSU returns to action Tuesday when the Cowboys host Wichita State at O'Brate Stadium. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
