Cowboy Baseball Earns Series Split
April 20, 2025 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER - Oklahoma State defeated Houston Sunday afternoon at O'Brate Stadium by a score of 9-1 to split the two-game weekend series. The game was official after 4 ½ innings due to Houston's travel curfew.
Â
With the win, the Cowboys snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 17-19 overall and 6-9 in Big 12 play, while UH is now 21-18 and 6-11 in the league.
Â
Mario Pesca made his fourth start and 15th appearance of the season for the Cowboys, picking up the win to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Bronx native worked the first four innings before a 69-minute rain delay and allowed only one unearned run on three hits while striking out four.
Â
OSU had a big day offensively, scoring in all four of its innings. Led by Nolan Schubart, four Cowboys collected multiple RBIs in the shortened game.
Â
Schubart got the Cowboys going off the jump with a long two-run home run that cleared the right-center field bleachers. It was Schubart's team-leading ninth home run of the season and the 49th round tripper of his career.
Â
Ian Daugherty had a big impact in the second inning on both sides of the ball. In the top of the frame, Daugherty erased a Cougar leadoff single with a great throw to second to catch Tre Broussard attempting to steal; Broussard entered the game with a Big 12-best 28 stolen bases and had been caught just once previously.
Â
Then to lead off the bottom of the inning, Daugherty smoked a double down the third base line and later scored on a Drew Culbertson sacrifice fly. The Cowboys scored three more in the inning, one on a Kollin Ritchie bases-loaded walk and the other two on a single by Colin Brueggeman to push the lead to 6-0.
Â
The Pokes added two more runs in the third on a pair of bases-loaded walks to Schubart and Ritchie before Houston took advantage of an error and got its only run in the fourth inning on an RBI groundout.
Â
Culbertson delivered his second RBI of the day with a single up the middle that scored Brock Thompson to provide the Cowboys' final score of the day.
Â
Following the long weather delay, Sean Youngerman came out of the bullpen and picked up a pair of strikeouts in a scoreless fifth inning.
Â
OSU concludes its five-game homestand Tuesday night when Dallas Baptist comes to Stillwater for a midweek test. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
