Cowgirl freshman steal show on multi-meet weekend
April 26, 2025 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men's and women's outdoor track & field continued productive outdoor campaigns with another split-meet day on Friday, traveling east to Fayetteville, Ark., for the John McDonnell Invitational and out west to Stanford, Calif., for the Payton Jordan Invitational.
The highlight of the day at the John McDonnell Invitational came in the 5,000 Meters, the meet's final event. Three of the top four spots were claimed by Cowboys, led by school record holder and first place finisher Brian Musau. In his first race since winning the NCAA Championship in the 5,000 Meters last month, the storied sophomore cruised to a win in the event, with Musau's time of 13:35.50 standing a whopping 19 seconds faster than the second-place mark.
Earlier in the day, three of the top six spots in the women's 1,500 Meters were claimed by Cowgirls, highlighted by a second place finish courtesy of freshman Maureen Rutoh. Rutoh's mark of 4:25.01 was less than a second off the winning time. Fellow freshman Autumn Michalski joined Rutoh in the top five, finishing fifth and winning her heat.
Out on the west coast at the Payton Jordan Invitational, several distance athletes competed in the 5,000 and 10,000 Meter races. Sophomore sensation Denis Kipngetich likely punched his ticket to the NCAA West Prelims with his dominant, 15 second victory in the 10,000 Meters with his time of 28:05.22. Kipngetich, already a multi-time cross country and track All-American, previously set the school record in the 10K less than a month ago at The Ten with his time of 27:20.10.
Freshman Henry Dover is quietly putting together an impressive debut outdoor campaign, completing the ninth-fastest 5K in program history with his time of 13:36.29. Dover entered this season with a lifetime best of 14:25.95 and has already taken almost a minute off that mark this year.
On the women's side, Cowgirl freshman Gentry Turner placed seventh in the 5,000 Meters Invitational, with her time of 16:06.26 moving her up to tenth best in program history in just her first season as a Cowgirl.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will travel out west again next weekend, heading to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Desert Heat Invitational next Saturday, May 3.
