STILLWATER – Oklahoma State converted a penalty kick with two minutes remaining to lift the Cowgirls to a 2-1 win over 16th-ranked West Virginia Sunday in their season home finale at Neal Patterson Stadium.
With the victory, OSU improved to 6-7-4 overall and 2-5-2 in conference play, while the Mountaineers fell to 9-4-2 and 4-4-1 in the Big 12. Both of the Cowgirls' league wins this season have come against ranked opponents; they knocked off No. 14 TCU on September 17.
Laudan Wilson netted the game winning PK, and Sonora DeFini scored her team-leading seventh goal for OSU, who outshot the visitors by a 15-10 margin. Avery Bass tallied five saves in goal for the Cowgirls.
The first half produced no goals for either team, with OSU holding 5-2 advantage in shots and Bass recording three saves.
Less than five minutes into the second half, West Virginia got a chance on goal, and it was Sophia Nickel putting the Mountaineers on the scoreboard first.
OSU's equalizer came in the 59th minute when Emma Jensen took a shot that was saved but not held by the WVU goalkeeper. DeFini stepped up and buried the rebound to make the score 1-1.
The match appeared headed for a draw until WVU committed a handball in the box at the 88-minute mark, allowing the Cowgirls a chance to take the lead. Wilson stepped up and blasted the penalty kick to the top left corner to give OSU the deciding score.
Next up for the Cowgirls is a match at Iowa State on Thursday in Ames, Iowa.
