Cowboy Baseball Powers Past Sam Houston
February 28, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
The Cowboys' offensive output marked the first time OSU has scored 20 runs in a game since May 17, 2024, against Houston as the Pokes improved to 7-3. Sam Houston fell to 4-6.
Ethan Lund took the bump to start for the Cowboys, making his third start of the season. The left-hander was exceptional, striking out 14 over six shutout innings while picking up the win to move to 2-0.
Zane Burns and Drew Winslow combined to pitch the final three innings and strike out five as the Pokes' pitching staff combined for 19 strikeouts.
OSU's offense reached the double-digit mark for the fifth time this season on the backs of a three home run game from Kollin Ritchie and a five-RBI day from Brock Thompson. Ritchie is the first Cowboy to hit three home runs in a game since Nolan Schubart had a program-record four against Wichita State in 2024.
Lund started the game off by striking out three in the first inning after allowing a leadoff single. He would continue this stretch through the second and third innings, striking out nine consecutive Bearkats.
It took until the 11th out of the game for Lund to record an out that wasn't a strikeout; he finished the fourth inning with 11 strikeouts.
The Pokes got on the board early thanks to back-to-back doubles from Alex Conover and Thompson to open the first inning against Tyler Ryden and make it a 1-0 game.
The Cowboy offense broke out in the second, putting five runs on the board and extending the lead to 6-0.
It all started on a two-out, hit-by-pitch from Brady Francisco, who was the inning's first runner. Conover then hit a pop fly to left field that was dropped for an error to score Francisco. Following a walk to Thompson, Ritchie sent a ball over the bullpen in right field for a three-run home run. Sebastian Norman tacked on another run with a bloop single that scored Aidan Meola.
The Pokes came right back with another five-run inning in the third, again highlighted by a Ritchie home run. Conover drove in Bowen with a triple in the right-center gap and was brought in by Thompson's second double of the day.
The Pokes put up three-run innings in both the fifth and six, with Ritchie hitting his third home run of the day in the fifth on a towering shot to right-center. Pinch hitter Deacon Pomeroy also homered in the frame, smashing the first pitch he saw in his career over the wall in left-center field.
Thompson hit his second home run of the series in the sixth inning, a three-run blast to make the score 17-0.
Danny Wallace capped off the scoring in the eighth inning with a three-run opposite field home run, the first round tripper of his career.
Sunday's series finale is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
