Q&A with Cowboy Football defensive backs coach Jordan Malone

Cowboy Football defensive backs coach Jordan Malone
On his relationship with coach Skyler Cassity…
"He's so easy to work with. He's the defensive coordinator; he is our leader. We follow him, but one thing he does is he allows us to have ownership of our position. He trusts us. He tells us how he wants it done, and he trusts us to get it done. It's been extremely, extremely easy to develop a relationship with coach Cassity, especially since he loves ball, I love ball, we always talk ball."
On how his familiarity with the coaching staff eased the transition:
"They love their football in Pullman [Washington State]. But things are a little bigger here. A little bit more excitement, obviously coming in with the new staff and things like that. Those two things have been great. I knew coach [Eric] Morris from Washington State, so the transition with the coaching staff was actually pretty easy in the sense that we all came from North Texas. We all knew each other, and I think that was really a thing that stood out."
On how the coaching staff connects with players…
"Relating is really about showing them that you care. You show them that you care, they'll show you who they are. Showing you who they are allows you to pour into them, allows you to get to know them for them. That's how you're able to really be able to coach younger guys, older guys, new guys, is finding out about them. Coach Morris has done a great job having breakfast club and doing different activities where we're allowed to learn these kids just outside of the meeting room, outside of the football field. That's been very hands-on to allow us to be able to learn these guys to be able to relate to them."
On how the defense wants to play in the spring game and the coming season…
"We want to play fast, we want to be physical and we want to play smart and be calculated in the things we do. Always still being aggressive, but being calculated with the risks we take. Coach [Cassity], as a defensive coordinator, does a great job of establishing the culture of what the defense is. We really put a lot on those secondary guys to run it. You're going to see guys take some ownership, and that's what we're really looking for. Those guys who finish it off and continue to take ownership of the defense with the communication, with the culture, with the physicality and what we want this defense to look."
