Q&A with Cowboy Football running backs coach Patrick Cobbs
April 17, 2026 | Cowboy Football
Cowboy Football running backs coach Patrick Cobbs
On returning to his home state of Oklahoma:
"It's been good. It's been phenomenal, it's been a long time coming. It was gonna take the right job, and this is definitely the right job, being close to home, where I grew up, getting to coach in such a great place with fantastic fans."
On the Transition to Oklahoma State University:
"It has been about as seamless as it could be. We're not having to coach coaches on the same stuff. We had the great opportunity of being together for three years, and then coming here together. Really, it was just getting familiar with the surroundings, and things outside of coaching."
On how he's enjoying the running backs room:
"It's fun, I'm big into the developmental stage, so watching film, and seeing what guys can do, and things you can coach. It's really something I like to do, even at the high school level. It's different having to bring in so many transfers. I love recruiting guys from high school for the developmental piece of it."
On what he wants his running backs room to look like:
"I want my room to be very different, and I don't want it to be the same. Things that translate is what I'm looking for, whether that's speed, whether that's agility, catching a ball out of the backfield, or being a good blocker. Things that fit into this offense that you can build off of, and they can find them a role."
On recruiting Caleb Hawkins:
"He came from a small town, a small school that had football for four years before I got there. I think you got to be familiar with the state of Oklahoma, I went to a camp and saw him play, invited him to a camp, and he showed me everything that I saw in-person, and it was a no brainer. A lot of people missed out on him and I'm glad he's glad he's with us."
On what he expects from the offense:
"Execution. Whatever play it is, just executing it. We try not to have to recoach things that we've been coaching all spring. We'd like to see growth, and we have. Every once in a while, kids are going to make mistakes, but try not to make the same mistake over and over again."
