Cowboy Baseball Falls In NCAA Regional Final
June 01, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
The Cowboys, who made their 13th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance and were a No. 2 seed, concluded their season with a 39-22 record. Alabama is now 40-19.
OSU homered four times in the contest as Deacon Pomeroy, Avery Ortiz, Brock Thompson and Kollin Ritchie all went deep. The Pokes finished with 150 home runs on the season, the second-highest total in program history behind only the 154 hit by the 1988 club.
Ritchie completed his historic season with 31 homers, second most in school history in a season behind only Pete Incaviglia's NCAA-record 48 in 1985.
Making his first start of the season in his 25th appearance, Noah Wech worked five innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out four.
Ethan Lund also took the mound for the Cowboys, coming on in relief of Wech two days after starting the Regional opener, and turned in an outstanding effort. The southpaw tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed just one run on one hit while striking out seven. He finished the year with 137 strikeouts, the eighth highest single-season total in program history.
Pitching in relief for the second-straight day, Mario Pesca took the loss to fall to 7-5 on the season as he gave up three runs on four hits in 1 1/3 innings.
UA got on the scoreboard in the second inning as Brennan Holt blooped an RBI single to right field with two outs to put the Tide up 1-0.
The third inning saw UA add to that advantage. After back-to-back singles to open the frame, a potential double play ball instead resulted in a fielder's choice and error to load the bases. A hit by pitch would then bring home a run before a two-RBI single put the Tide up 4-0.
The Pokes cut their deficit to one in the bottom of the frame. Pomeroy got the scoring started when he unloaded on a two-run homer to right-center field; the round-tripper was the freshman's third of the season and made the score 4-2.
Three batters later, Ritchie doubled with two outs, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then came home on another wild pitch to make it a one-run ballgame.
The Tide got a run back in the fifth when Jason Torres led off the inning with a homer to left-center field to put them up 5-3.
OSU answered in the sixth with a leadoff bomb of its own as Ortiz went opposite field, depositing a pitch over the wall in right to make it a 5-4 contest.
In the seventh, the Cowboys used the long ball to take their first lead. Thompson sent a laser to right field to tie the score, and Ritchie followed with his 31st blast of the season, another line drive to right that put OSU up 6-5.
The lead did not last however, as in the eighth, Eric Hines delivered a game-tying homer to left field.
The game remained deadlocked until the 11th. UA put two runners on via infield singles, and with two outs, Brady Neal homered to right field to give the Tide a 9-6 advantage.
The Pokes would fight back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with two outs before an RBI single from Garrett Shull brought home a run. However, a strikeout ended the rally.
OSU had four players named to the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional All-Tournament Team - Colin Brueggemann (1B), Shull (2B), Ortiz (3B) and Ritchie (OF).
