Gokpinar wins the UTR Shootout - Stillwater

STILLWATER — Haydar Gokpinar captured the UTR Shootout - Stillwater title early Sunday afternoon as part of a strong fall debut from the Oklahoma State men's tennis team.
Gokpinar, a sophomore from Hatay, Turkey, went a perfect 4-0 over the two-day event. After cruising through his first two rounds, he survived a third-set tiebreaker against teammate Hank Trondson in a Sunday morning's semifinals, 6-1, 5-7, (10-7) before knocking off Cowboy sophomore Christopher Thies in the final, 6-1, 2-1, ret.
Thies survived a super tiebreaker of his own in the quarterfinal round, rallying to defeat OSU teammate Ben Stecker, 5-7, 6-1, (11-9). On Sunday morning he swept Tulsa's Brett Gloria, 6-3, 6-3 to punch his ticket to the final.
Trondson also impressed in his unofficial Cowboy debut. Prior to his semifinal heartbreaker, the senior transfer won two Saturday matches in straight sets, including a 6-1, 6-3 quarterfinal victory over OSU freshman Ilan Hediger.
The seven Oklahoma State players finished the weekend 9-2 against outside opponents with returning players Ian Bracks, Thomas Gadecki and Stecker combining for four of those wins.
