STILLWATER, Okla. -- The largest crowd to ever watch a wrestling dual in the state of Oklahoma -- 10,802 -- turned out as the second-ranked Cowboys won 24-12 over sixth-ranked Oklahoma at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Sunday.
The previous record was 10,000 in Norman on Feb. 7, 1979, OSU's old record was 8,300
"It was fantastic," OSU head coach John Smith said. "That is something we really enjoyed seeing and wrestling in front of, it takes a little to get used to. I don't know how well we wrestled tonight, I have mixed emotions. I thought we looked pretty good at times. This is the kind of preparation that helps us for nationals, being able to wrestle in front of these kinds of numbers. The Cowboys finish their season with a 17-1 record and a 5-0 mark in the Big 12 Conference."
Oklahoma State got the jolt of energy they needed at 174 pounds. Sixth-ranked Tyrone Lewis scored a takedown with 11 seconds remaining for a 3-1 win over OU's ninth-ranked Micheal Barger.
OSU's third-ranked Daniel Cormier locked up the win at 184 pound with a fall in 2:44, electrifying the Cowboy faithful. However, Cormier had to fight out of a Lambrecht cradle before he got the fall.
"We still had two more matches after that and my heart fluttered a little when Daniel Cormier got in that cradle," said Smith. "My heart stopped for about three seconds there. You don't teach that defense of what he did. That is just the pure athletic ability of getting himself out of what didn't look good."
The match opened at heavyweight where Leonce Crump was awarded a locked hands penalty point with seven second remaining in a tiebreaker for a 2-1 win.
OU's Matt Ridings gave Cowboys fans a scare at 125 pounds, hooking up a cradle in the second period and almost pinned Matt Brown. Brown fought off the fall, but lost a 8-1 decision.
Johnny Thompson put the first points of the afternoon up for the Cowboys at 133 pounds, picking up an 8-3 decision over OU's 18th-ranked Witt Durden.
Second-ranked 141-pounder, Michael Lightner, extended the Oklahoma lead to 9-3 following a 5-3 win over eighth-ranked Charles Walker.
In his last dual at Gallagher-Iba Arena, top-ranked Reggie Wright ran his all-time record against ninth-ranked Jared Frayer to 9-0 with a 7-2 win.
At 157 pounds, OU sent it's fourth-string 157-pounder, Tony Moore, to the mat to face Shane Roller.
The 16th-ranked Roller took care of business, pinning Moore with four seconds remaining in the second period. The pin gave OSU its first lead of the afternoon at 12-9.
The Pokes lost a heartbreaker at 165 pounds, when Chris Pendleton wasn't awarded a thrid-period takedown and suffered a 4-2 loss to the Sooners fifth-ranked Robbie Waller.
Mark Mu?oz followed with a 4-3 win over 11th-ranked Waymon May at 197 pounds.
OSU is off until the Big 12 Championship in Stillwater on March 2-3.
