December 07, 2008 | Cowboy Wrestling
NORMAN, Okla. Â The No. 9 Oklahoma State wrestling team lost an 18-15 decision at the hands of No. 20 Oklahoma in McCasland Fieldhouse Sunday. An injury default at 133 pounds ended up being the difference as both teams won five bouts, but the three additional bonus points from the injury default gave the Sooners the win.

125 pounds: In a match that lived up to its billing as an even contest, Oklahoma's Joey Fio used his defensive skills to his advantage in claiming a 2-1 tiebreaker win over Cowboy Obenson Blanc. Blanc was in on three good ankle picks during regulation but Fio was able to wiggle free each time to avoid the takedowns. The only scoring in regulation came when Blanc escaped to start the second period and Fio escaped to start the third. After a scoreless sudden victory period, Blanc was unable to escape from the down position in the first tiebreaker, but Fio got loose with 13 seconds left during his time in the down position to win the bout.
133 pounds: Cowboy junior Tyler Shinn injured his shoulder early in the first period of his bout with David Armstrong. Shinn continued to wrestle though he was clearly not himself and eventually was forced to injury default to Armstrong with 1:24 showing on the clock in the second period. Further details of Shinn's injury are not known at this time.
141 pounds: Jamal Parks picked up the best win of his career to date by claiming a 10-7 win over No. 12 Zack Bailey that didn't feel that close. Parks was the aggressor throughout the bout, scoring four takedowns to Bailey's one. Parks added 1:12 of riding time to seal his first-ever win over a ranked opponent.
149 pounds: Luke Silver was not able to generate any offense against No. 15 Kyle Terry and eventually lost a 10-3 decision. Terry scored a takedown at the 1:15 mark of the first period, with Silver's escape 11 seconds later closing the first-period scoring. With Silver starting the second period in the down position, Terry was about to mount nearly a minute of riding time before Silver got loose, then immediately took him down again and rode the Cowboy redshirt freshman out for the remainder of the period to take a 4-2 lead into the final stanza. It was more of the same in the third period, with Terry scoring an escape and two takedowns and adding 2:11 of riding time to close out his win.
157 pounds: Newly McSpadden fought off a frantic finish by No. 14 Shane Vernon to capture a 6-5 win in a bout that featured only one takedown, which McSpadden scored at the 1:27 mark of the first period. Vernon scored on a pair of reversals and an escape, with McSpadden adding a reversal of his own to go with two escapes. With McSpadden pushing for a takedown late in the third period, Vernon was able to fight the Cowboy off and try for a takedown of his own that never came to fruition as time expired to give McSpadden the win.
165 pounds: Brandon Mason improved to 11-1 on the year with a 1-0 win over Ryan Smith. The match featured no action to speak of in the first two periods, with neither wrestler scoring in the first period. Smith chose the neutral position to start the second, with neither wrestler scoring in that period either. Mason scored the lone point of the match when he escaped with 1:42 on the clock in the third period after starting in the down position.
174 pounds: In one of the more exciting matches of the dual, Kyle Griffin fell agonizingly short in losing a 7-5 decision to No. 9 Jeff James. Griffin found himself in serious trouble in the first period when James took him down, and locked in a cradle at the 1:48 mark. Griffin somehow got out of the predicament without allowing James to score any back points, then escaped and scored a takedown of his own to take a 3-2 lead. The lone scoring of the second period came when James got a reversal after beginning in the down position. With Griffin down to start the third period, James mounted his riding time advantage, but was hit for stalling and gave up a Griffin escape to fall behind 5-4 with 24 seconds remaining on the clock. James scored what amounted to the winning takedown with 18 seconds left, then added 3:04 of riding time to claim his win.
184 pounds: Jared Shelton lost a 7-2 decision to Pat Flynn after allowing a reversal that eventually led to a three-point nearfall in the second period. Flynn held a 2-0 lead after scoring a takedown with three seconds left in the first period, but his performance in the second period gave the Sooner all the cushion he needed to seal his win. Shelton scored a takedown in the third period, but wasn't able to add any other scoring.
197 pounds: Clayton Foster claimed his best individual win to date with a 12-9 victory over No. 8 Eric Lapotsky. Foster took Lapotsky down twice, reversed him twice, had a two-point nearfall and had an escape and 2:16 of riding time to claim his win. Owning a 7-2 lead going into the third period, Foster was in complete control of the match and cut Lapotsky loose to start the period. He added another takedown to extend his lead to 9-3 with 1:41 left in the second and let Lapotsky loose again. Lapotsky was able to close the gap between the two, however, with a takedown and a three-point nearfall, but Foster then reversed him to extend his lead to 11-9. Foster's riding time advantage brought the final score to 12-9.
285 pounds: Having the pressure of knowing that he needed a pin to salvage a tie in the dual for his team, Jared Rosholt won a 7-2 decision over Nathan Fernandez. Rosholt scored a takedown and locked in a cradle late in the first period, but Fernandez was saved by the clock expiring. That was Rosholt's best chance at a pin. A Rosholt escape was the only point of the second period. Fernandez chose the neutral position to start the third period and got taken down twice, but did not allow the pin to preserve his team's win.
