HAMPTON, Va. - The fourth-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team punched its ticket into the finals of the Virginia Duals with a 24-13 win over No. 14 Penn State Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys registered bonus points in three of their six wins.
With the win over Penn State, the Cowboys improved to 7-0-1 on the year, while the Nittany Lions slipped to 8-2-1. OSU is now set to face No. 11 Lehigh in the Virginia Duals final at 7:30 p.m. Central time. That dual will be aired live on 105.5 FM radio Stillwater and online at www.okstate.com.
The key matches of the dual came at 125 pounds and 141 pounds, where Chris Notte handed No. 14 Brad Pataky a 9-7 defeat and Jamal Parks pinned Adam Lynch in 3:55, respectively. OSU 174-pounder Mike Benefiel was a 21-5 technical fall winner over Justin Ortega, with Cowboy 133-pounder Jordan Oliver adding a 14-4 major decision win over Bryan Pearsall.
As has become a recurring theme this year, Alan Gelogaev and Jared Rosholt both won comfortably at 197 pounds and 285 pounds, respectively. Gelogaev breezed past David Crowell by a 14-7 score and Rosholt was a 3-0 winner in a bout that wasn't nearly as close as the final score reflected.
The dual saw the return of Cowboy 184-pounder Clayton Foster, who lost a 9-3 decision to No. 13 David Erwin after missing more than a month due to injury.

125 pounds: In one of the more wild bouts of the season, Chris Notte was a 9-7 winner over 14th-ranked Brad Pataky to open the dual. The bout got off to an inauspicious start for Notte when Pataky shot in immediately and connected on a double-leg takedown to go up, 2-0. After a hard ride by Pataky, Notte reversed the Nittany Lion junior to even the score at 2-2 before Pataky got loose for an escape. Pataky went for a cement mixer, but Notte caught him and turned it into a takedown of his own to go up, 4-3. Pataky opened the second period with an escape and then shot in for a takedown attempt, but Notte caught him with a headlock, took him down and threw him to his back for a two-point nearfall. Pataky was then able to reverse Notte to bring the score to 8-6. Notte escaped immediately to start the third period to open his lead to 9-6. Neither wrestler made any kind of serious offensive attack for the rest of the bout and Pataky's riding time point brought the final score to 9-7.
133 pounds: Easton, Pa., native Jordan Oliver picked up a dominating 14-4 major decision win over Penn State's Bryan Pearsall. Oliver bagged three takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the first period to set the tone for his overwhelming win. Pearsall opened the second period in the down position and was turned to his back for a three-point nearfall for Oliver before eventually being ridden out for the duration of the period. The two wrestlers started the third period in the neutral position and the only action was a late takedown for Oliver. When the Cowboy freshman's 3:16 of riding time was added, he was a 14-4 winner.
141 pounds: Jamal Parks dominated Adam Lynch before eventually pinning him at the 3:55 mark. Parks, who held a 7-1 lead at the time of the fall, caught Lynch when he was trying to sit out and threw him down to his back to set up his win by fall. It was the second time this year Parks beat Lynch with bonus points, as Parks was a 13-3 major decision winner over Lynch at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
149 pounds: Quinten Fuentes dropped a 9-0 major decision to fifth-ranked Frank Molinaro. Molinaro shot in for a double-leg takedown one minute into the match and rode Fuentes out for the remainder of the first period. Fuentes started the second period in the down position and was turned to his back for a three-point nearfall. A Molinaro escape to start the third period followed by another Molinaro takedown and the Nittany Lion's 5:27 riding time advantage brought the final to 9-0.
157 pounds: A pair of wrestlers who are familiar with one another tangled at 157 pounds, where second-ranked Cyler Sanderson of Penn State was a 5-4 winner over Neil Erisman in a bout that saw a good deal of action and excitement. Erisman and Sanderson split their two bouts last year while Sanderson wrestled for Iowa State. Sanderson hit a takedown in the first period, but Erisman escaped to bring the score to 2-1. Erisman started the second period in the down position and escaped immediately to tie the score at 2-2. Sanderson tried to roll out of Erisman's control early in the third period, but Erisman instead stacked him up for a two-point nearfall to take a 4-2 lead. Sanderson got loose for an escape to bring the score to 4-3, then sealed his 5-4 win with a takedown at the 41-second mark.
165 pounds: In a rematch of the Reno Tournament of Champions semifinal bout, Oklahoma State's Alex Meade lost a 2-1 decision to No. 8 Dan Vallimont of Penn State. After a scoreless first period, Vallimont got on the board when Meade was penalized for locking his hands early in the second period. Vallimont added to his lead when he escaped shortly after the penalty point to go up, 2-0. Meade's escape to start the third capped the scoring.
174 pounds: Mike Benefiel stormed his way to a 21-5 technical fall win over Justin Ortega. The bout was stopped at the 6:15 mark. The tone was set in the first period, when Benefiel scored three takedowns and a three-point nearfall to take a 9-2 lead. A quick escape to start the second brought Benefiel's lead to 10-2, then he added two more second-period takedowns to hold a 14-3 lead after five minutes. It was more of the same in the third period as Benefiel took Ortega down and scored a two-point nearfall before cutting him loose and then taking him down again before the bout was ended.
184 pounds: After missing more than a month due to injury, Clayton Foster returned to the mat Saturday afternoon and lost a 9-3 decision to No. 13 David Erwin. An Erwin takedown and a Foster escape marked the only scoring of the first period. After starting the second period in the down position, Foster reversed Erwin to take a 3-2 lead, but it was all Erwin from that point, as the Nittany Lion racked up six unanswered points with a pair of takedowns, a pair of escapes and a riding time point in the third period to seal his win.
197 pounds: Alan Gelogaev roughed up David Crowell in his 14-7 win. The Cowboy sophomore racked up six takedowns and a pair of escapes during the bout.
285 pounds: After a scoreless first period, Rosholt reversed Wade early in the second period to take a 2-0 lead. The two wrestlers started the third period in the neutral position with neither able to rack up any points. Rosholt's 1:24 riding time advantage put a cap on his 3-0 win.
