Lawrence, Kan. -- Oklahoma State's offense pounded out 12 hits and the ninth-ranked Cowgirls defeated Kansas 11-3 here Saturday afternoon in Big 12 softball action at Arrocha Ballpark. OSU has now won 15-consecutive games.
The Cowgirls scored four runs on four hits in the top of the first inning, including back-to-back doubles by Julie Ward and Tamara Brown. Mariah Gearhart beat out the throw on a bunt to lead off the inning and advanced to second as the ball dribbled into shallow right field. She advanced to third on a sacrifice hit by Katelyn Bright, then scored on a single by Alysia Hamilton. Brown's double scored both Hamilton and Ward, then the Cowgirl catcher scored on a base hit by designated player Taylor Marcum.
Starting pitcher Anna Whiddon started out shaky in the bottom half of the frame, giving up a pair of infield singles and a walk to load the bases without an out. But the senior hurler eventually settled in, striking out cleanup hitter Brittany Hile and forcing the next two batters to pop up to end the threat.
Alex Jones, the Enid, Okla., native who started for the Jayhawks in the circle, was relieved with just one out in the top of the first. Her replacement, Allie Clark, threw a scoreless second, but found herself in trouble in the third. Ward led off with a walk and pinch runner Breana Casaus stole second. Brown and senior Megan Castle followed with consecutive singles, the second scoring Casaus. Marcum hit a blooper into shallow centerfield and Jones, who had moved to the position after being pulled from the circle, attempted a basket catch after apparently losing the ball in the sun. The ball glanced off her glove, allowing Brown to score.
Kelsey Anchors hit a single down the rightfield line, scoring Castle, and Gearhart hit a drive to centerfield, scoring Marcum on a sacrifice fly and giving OSU an 8-0 lead. A solo home run with two out in the bottom of the third by Mariah Montgomery made it 8-1 Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State made sure to score in every other inning, posting three more runs on the board in the fifth inning. Four-straight hits, including a two run double by Hamilton, gave the Cowgirls a 11-1 lead. Kansas cut it to 11-3 on a bases-loaded two-run single by Hile off left-hander Sarah Odom, who had replaced Whiddon to start the inning. Whiddon returned to the circle with two outs and struck Amanda Jobe out looking to end the game due to the run-rule.
Oklahoma State (38-7 overall, 8-0 Big 12) and Kansas (18-25, 1-9) will conclude the series with a game at noon on Sunday.
