Stillwater, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's Anna Whiddon threw a two-hit shutout, striking out eight Shockers as the seventh-ranked Cowgirls shut out Wichita State 1-0 here Wednesday night in non-conference softball action. It was Oklahoma State's 17-consecutive victory.
The Cowgirl senior hurler improved to 20-3 this season with her fifth shutout of the year. She allowed just two base runners, giving up a base hit to left field to Kiersten Dixon in the second and a single up the middle to Lindsie Mitts with two outs in the sixth.
The Cowgirls scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mariah Gearhart led off with a hit to right centerfield that rolled all the way to the wall. The speedster rounded second without hesitation and ended up at third with her first triple of the season and her second hit of the game. Two batters later, Alysia Hamilton hit a single to shallow right field, plating Gearhart.
WSU starter Kasha Kolb kept the Cowgirls off balance at the plate, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out eight OSU batters. Megan Castle had the only other hit for Oklahoma State.
The Cowgirls improved to 40-7 on the season and are just the second team nationally to 40 victories. It's also the first time OSU has reached the 40-win plateau since 1998.
Oklahoma State will travel to Lubbock, Texas, for a Thursday doubleheader against the Texas Tech Red Raiders. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
