Austin, Texas -- Oklahoma State's Cowgirl softball team shut out the fifth-ranked Texas Longhorns, UT's second shutout of the season, as OSU defeated the 'Horns 3-0 here Saturday afternoon before 1,127 fans at McCombs Field.

Oklahoma State scored the game-winning run in the top of the first. Shelby Davis led off the game with a base hit to shallow centerfield, and after a groundout, advanced to third on a base hit by Tamara Brown. She then scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Julie Ward.

The Cowgirls added a couple of insurance runs in the sixth. Three-consecutive hits by Chelsea Garcia, Amy Graham and Gessenia DeLaCruz loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Sammy Jo Diffendaffer hit a fly ball to right, scoring Garcia on a sacrifice fly. Ari Morrison, who went 3-for-3 in the game, followed with a base hit through the left side off Texas starting pitcher Kim Bruins, scoring Graham and giving OSU a 3-0 lead.

The Longhorns had plenty of scoring opportunities, with runners reaching second base every inning after the first. However, UT went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position, thanks to some fine pitching by starter Simone Freeman and reliever Kat Espinosa. Freeman got the victory and improved to 7-6 on the season, while Espinosa picked up her third save of the season.

It was Oklahoma State's second win over a ranked opponent this season, and the Cowgirls' first victory over a top-five team since OSU defeated No. 5 Tennessee twice in the NCAA Regional tournament last season.

Oklahoma State (23-17 overall, 6-7 Big 12) and Texas (36-7, 10-5) will play the rubber match on Sunday at 11 am.
