ALPHARETTA, Ga. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team opened play at the NCAA Championship on Tuesday with a 279 to stand in a tie for seventh place at Capital City Club's Crabapple Course.
The Cowboys finished the day knotted with Texas at 1-under par. Arizona State posted a 10-under par 270 to lead Georgia Tech by four shots in the team race.
ASU's Jon Rahm blistered the par-70, 7,319-yard layout with a 9-under 61 to lead the individual race by four shots as well.
Four players finished the day tied for fourth place after carding 67s. Among the group at 3-under par were OSU juniors Talor Gooch and Ian Davis.
"Anytime you can shoot under par on this course it is a good score. It is a tough course, so we just wanted to get off to a good start and hopefully we can keep it going," Gooch said.
Gooch got out of the gate quickly with birdies on three of his first five holes before turning at 2-under 33. He went eagle-birdie on Nos. 12 and 13 to move to 5-under for the day before eventually finishing at 3-under for his round.
Davis carded birdies at the fifth and sixth before turning in 34. He navigated his inward nine without a bogey and used birdies at the 10th and 18th to post a 2-under 33 to get to his total.
Freshman Jordan Niebrugge signed for a 71 to come in tied for 49th, while junior Kevin Dougherty wrapped up the day tied for 113th with a 74.
Sophomore Patrick Winther posted a 78 to finish tied for 148th place.
The Cowboys will begin their second round at 12:20 (EST) tomorrow and will be grouped with LSU and Auburn.
Quotes From Talor Gooch Concerning The Recent Tornadoes In Oklahoma
On wearing a blue ribbon on his hat (in honor of those affected by the Oklahoma tornadoes last week)
"What happened last week has definitely been on our minds. I am from right around there (Moore, Okla.). The tornado picked up about two miles away from my house. My family was in a shelter when it came through. We have been through tornadoes and it is definitely a sad event anytime they happen."
"I can't necessarily donate a lot of money, but I just want to try and help out in any way that I can. If we can play some good golf and have some people back at home see that, hopefully it can do some good. I think it's awesome that we can play from them and hopefully represent them well."
On going down to Moore to volunteer
"We had hoped to go down and help out a couple of days after it happened, but there was something with insurance and picking up debris that we could not actually help move stuff. Hopefully after this, next Monday or Tuesday, we can get down there and help out."
On the first time he had heard about what happened in Moore
"I was actually in the locker room at Karsten when we heard about it. We were practicing in the afternoon and we saw that the weather was starting to get bad so we came in and looked at it. Since it didn't look like it was that close to us, we went back out and practiced a little more. Not even 30 minutes later we went back inside and saw what had happened. It was absolutely crazy."
On having any other friends or family affected
"I have some friends from Moore, Okla. I know one person who had their home completely taken out by the tornado and another that basically half their house was destroyed, but will probably have to rebuild everything. I know some other people who I have kind of met before who were affected as well. It's just a sad, sad deal."
