Cowboys Suffer 4-3 Heartbreaker to No. 7 Texas
March 27, 2015 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER -- No. 22 Oklahoma State's men's tennis team was barely edged by seventh-ranked Texas, 4-3, in an intense match under the lights at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Friday.
The Cowboys (15-4; 0-1 Big 12) showed a lot of competitiveness in doubles but fell just short, losing matches on courts one and three.
Jurence Mendoza and Lukas Finzelberg partnered up on court three, where they dropped a close 6-4 contest to Nick Naumann and Michael Reichmann.
The No. 24 duo of Jakob Sude and Arjun Kadhe went to a tiebreaker with No. 41 Glasspool/Hess-Olesen, but the Longhorn duo got a quick start and eventually sealed the doubles win for Texas.
Play was not finished on court two, where Lucas Gerch and Nicolai Ferrigno led Berkowicz and Goldhoff, 6-5.
In singles, UT was able to extend its lead to 2-0, when Tristan Meraut retired due to injury to George Goldhoff on court four.
With a Longhorn win on court three, UT added another team point, but the Cowboys began a strong comeback, starting with a huge win on court one.
Senior Jakob Sude, ranked No. 87 in the nation, posted one of the biggest wins of his career, defeating the top-ranked singles player in the nation, Soren Hess-Olesen, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
"I'm obviously very excited about my win in singles," Sude said. "He's really good. I lost to him last year so it's nice to get that win back. On the other hand, it stings that we didn't get the team win, but the singles was a good win for me. I think I served really well and I have been recently so that's helped a lot."
Shortly after, Lukas Finzelberg put together a strong finish on court five against Nick Naumann. The redshirt freshman dropped his first set 6-1 but rushed back in the second and produced his own 6-1 win. He finished off the Longhorn with a 6-4 decision in the third set, cutting the Texas lead to one.
At the No. 2 spot, Lucas Gerch went to three sets against No. 37 Lloyd Glasspool. He blanked the Longhorn in the first, 6-0, but was forced to a third set, when Glasspool notched a 6-2 win in the second. The third set went to an intense tiebreaker and Gerch emerged with the victory to tie the team score, 3-3.
The deciding point came down to action on court six, where Nicolai Ferrigno and Clement Homs went to three sets. Ferrigno recovered after losing the first set and forced a third. During a competitive third set, the two exchanged games, but Homs eventually pulled away, sealing the win for Texas.
The Cowboys will return to the Greenwood Tennis Center on Sunday, facing No. 10 TCU at 1 p.m.
