Cowboys Claim Road Victory At No. 45 Memphis
January 18, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad got its first road victory of the season on Monday as they shutout No. 45-ranked Memphis in front of a packed crowd at the Racquet Club of Memphis in Memphis, Tennessee.
"It was a great match overall and a good road win for us," coach Jay Udwadia said. "Memphis had a good team and they competed hard."
All-American duo and No. 9-ranked Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash set the tone for the Cowboys by quickly beating Memphis duo Kai Lemke/Louis Asser, 6-1, respectively.
With No. 53-ranked duo Jurence Mendoza/Lukas Finzelberg trailing 5-3 on court three, Oklahoma State duo Temur Ismailov/Lucas Gerch needed to close out their match to clinch the doubles point for the Cowboys. Luckily, it wouldn't be a problem for the new duo as they won five straight games to give the Cowboys a 1-0 lead heading into the singles portion of the match.
"I was happy with the way we started in doubles and kept that momentum going into singles," Udwadia said.
Speaking of carrying momentum, junior Tristan Meraut dominated his singles match against Shakeel Manji on court four, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Cowboys a two point lead with five singles matches remaining.
Poke Finzelberg would join Meraut soon after as he defeated Felix Rauch on court six, 6-3, 6-3, to put the Cowboys one point away from victory.
Wrapping up the win for the Cowboys would be the two-time All-American Kadhe on court two. After winning the tiebreaker for the first set, the junior won a hard-earned second set to give Oklahoma State its first victory over a ranked-opponent this season.
OSU's Cash, Gerch and Ismailov all went to three sets in their matches, but didn't finish due to Kadhe clinching the match with his victory on court two.
Next up for the Cowboys is the ITA Kick-Off in Fort Worth, Texas, on Jan. 23-24, which features No. 32 Harvard, No. 38 San Diego State and host No. 3-ranked TCU.
