Cash and Kadhe Conclude Historic Fall Season
November 06, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Oklahoma State tennis' top-ranked duo of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe played the final match of the Cowboys' fall campaign on Sunday, dropping a hard-fought contest in the back draw finals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.
Taking part in their third final of the fall, Cash and Kadhe found themselves in an early hole as Florida's Alfredo Perez and Johannes Ingildsen stormed out of the gates in the match. The Cowboys found themselves trailing 5-0 in the first set, but attempted to mount a comeback by rattling off three straight games before the Gators were able to close out the set.
That set-clinching game sparked another run from the Gators as they took four straight games to open the second set. The Cowboys again tried to find a surge of momentum as they were able to hold serve and get on the board. A break point followed for Cash and Kadhe as they looked to close the gap, but the Florida tandem ultimately proved to be too much as they knocked off the Cowboys, 6-3, 6-2.
The loss to Perez and Ingildsen marks the end of a historic fall season for Cash and Kadhe, as well as the rest of the Oklahoma State squad.
On September 13, Cash and Kadhe became the first Oklahoma State doubles team to earn the nation's No. 1 ranking. The All-American tandem carried that ranking throughout the fall and tallied 10 wins in total, including five over ranked foes. Their impressive fall campaign also included capturing the ITA Central Regional doubles title on October 24, which made Cash and Kadhe the first OSU tandem to win the event since 2009 when Aleksey Bessonov and Cowboy legend Oleksandr Nedovyesov took the crown. The Cowboy duo also displayed their talents on a national stage as they finished runner-up in the ITA All-American Championships back draw for a second consecutive year.
As a singles competitor, Cash, along with his teammate Lukas Finzelberg, made history as they became the first Cowboys to compete in the main draw at the ITA All-American Championships since 2009 when Nedovyesov won the event. OSU won 51 matches collectively during the fall campaign, but the squad's focus now turns to the spring season where the Cowboys will look to improve on last season's historic success when OSU hosted its first NCAA Regional in a decade and advanced to the Round of 16 for the first time since 2008.
Oklahoma State's spring slate is set to begin on January 21 when the Cowboys take on Texas-Rio Grande Valley at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center. Fans will have plenty of opportunities to see the Cowboys compete early in the season as OSU's first five duals will be played on their home courts.
