Cowboys Impress In First Round Win Over Bryant
May 14, 2016 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's men's tennis squad advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tennis Championship for a third consecutive year by defeating Bryant in its opening round matchup on Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Center, 4-0.
"It was a good performance; we hadn't played in a couple of weeks so it was good to get a victory," coach Jay Udwadia said. "Anytime you can get off the court with a win in the NCAA Tournament, you've got to be happy."
The Cowboys got off to a quick start in doubles play with Lucas Gerch/Jurence Mendoza jumping out in front of Bryant's Luke Lorenz/Max Vogt, 3-0. The Poke duo continued its strong play as they won their match on court two, 6-1, putting OSU one win away from the doubles point.
On court one, All-American's Arjun Kadhe/Julian Cash also had a good start and went on to defeat Bryant's Nick Lamart/Michael Plutt, 6-1, to give the Pokes a 1-0 edge heading into singles.
Cash, ranked No. 56, carried his momentum from doubles into singles as he won 10-straight games in his match to defeat Vogt on court one, 6-0, 6-1, and extend the Poke lead to 2-0. The sophomore now has 19 singles victories this season.
"We hadn't played in a couple of weeks now and there's always going to be a few things you're not happy with at the start, but I think doubles helped with that," Cash said.
After the quick victory, the remaining five Cowboys won the first set in their respective matches after Nathan Roper took the first set tiebreak from Bryant's Jorge Ortiz-Garcia, 7-6(7), to complete the first set sweep for the Pokes.
"I'm just trying to stay focused on every point and I look over and I see the scores and everybody is doing really well," Roper said. "We were battling out there, but luckily I got the win in the set."
Tristan Meraut collected his 10th singles victory of the season on court four with a straight-set win over M. Plutt, 6-4, 6-0, giving the Cowboys a 3-0 cushion. The sophomore is now 8-2 in singles when playing at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
With the Cowboys needing one more singles win to secure the victory, they looked to their All-American Kadhe who would only surrender five games in two sets to Oliver Welsh before defeating the Bulldog, 6-2, 6-3, to give the Pokes their 12th home win of the season.
"Our guys came to play today and leading into Arkansas, I think we're playing in good form and we're definitely ready for the challenge," Udwadia said.
The victory will mark the 17th time in program history that the Cowboys have made it to at least the second round of the NCAA Tennis Championships.
Tomorrow, Oklahoma State will take on Arkansas in the second round at 1 p.m. CT at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The two teams met earlier this season in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where the Pokes proved to be too much for the Razorbacks as they won 5-2 to take the all-time series lead, 16-15.
"It's another match for us, we played Arkansas earlier in the season and it was a close match," Cash said. "It was on their home territory and we look forward to having them here and seeing if we can get the job done again."
Tickets for the match tomorrow will be available for purchase at the Greenwood Tennis Center or by calling 877-ALL-4-OSU. Cost of admission is $5, while students are admitted for $3.
