Cowboys Grind Out Win Over No. 25 Minnesota
February 24, 2017 | Cowboy Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team won its second road match of the season on Friday night, as the eighth-ranked Cowboys dropped No. 25 Minnesota, 5-2.
The Cowboys (9-3, 0-0 Big 12) have now beaten four top-25 opponents this season. Friday's victory also saw OSU improve to 9-1 when the Cowboys capture the all-important doubles point.
Oklahoma State continued its trend of starting fast in doubles on Friday, as Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza, ranked No. 31 in the nation, dropped Minnesota's Marino Alpeza and Justyn Levin to give the Cowboys the early advantage in doubles play.
Minnesota leveled doubles action with a win on court three, but the nation's fourth-ranked tandem of Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe sealed the doubles point for OSU with a 6-3 win over No. 32 Felix Corwin and Matic Spec. The duo has won 18 matches this season, including nine victories over ranked foes. Friday's victory marked the sixth time that Cash and Kadhe have clinched the doubles point for the Cowboys this season.
In the ensuing singles play, Lucas Gerch was again the first Cowboy to claim victory, knocking off Minnesota's Stefan Milicevic in straight sets. The left-hander cruised through the first set against the Golden Gopher, dropping just one game. Gerch then ran into some resistance in the second, but powered through to snag his 12th singles win of the season, 6-1, 6-4.
The Cowboys saw their lead grow to 3-1 after newcomer Artur Dubinski picked up his third collegiate singles win. The sophomore knocked off Minnesota's Eli Ogilvy in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Minnesota picked up its second singles win of the night on court five, where OSU's Jurence Mendoza fell to Josip Krstanovic in three sets, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. The Golden Gophers continued to push the Cowboys to the limit , forcing third sets on the remaining two courts.
Tristan Meraut ended Minnesota's comeback attempt, however, as he mounted an impressive comeback of his own to clinch OSU's ninth win of the season.
Meraut dropped a tight first set to Minnesota's Marino Alpeza, but was able to win a second-set tiebreak to earn the split with the Gopher. The two continued to play each other tightly in the third, but Meraut was able to snag a crucial break point to go up 5-3 late in the set. From there the junior clinched the match for Oklahoma State, as he won, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5.
Julian Cash, already late into his third set with Matic Spec, played out the remainder of his match. The two competitors traded tiebreaks in the first two sets, but Cash was able to pull away late in the third set to go over No 68 Spec, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), 7-5. Cash's win marks his 11th of the season and his sixth win in dual-match play during the spring.
Oklahoma State will continue its Big Ten roadtrip on Sunday when the Cowboys square off with No. 13 Northwestern in Evanston, Illinois. Sunday's matchup will mark the second meeting between the teams this season, with OSU taking the first, 4-2, during the opening round of last weekend's ITA National Indoor Championship.
