STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team paid tribute to its four seniors on Friday, as the fifth-ranked Cowboys blanked Tulsa, 4-0, in front of a standing-room only crowd at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
"These guys deserve all of the credit for all the work they've done to help our program grow," head coach Jay Udwadia said of this year's senior class. "Personally, this is my first group of four-year graduates so it was pretty emotional and I'm glad I didn't break down too much at the end. Thankfully, we were able to be a quality opponent in Tulsa and then get to celebrate a little bit afterward."
Including Friday's win, the Cowboys (21-4; 3-1 Big 12) have now won 13 of their past 14 matches, with seven of those victories coming against ranked opponents. OSU has also now recorded eight shutouts season, seven of which have come at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
Friday's contest began in similar fashion to many of the squad's matches in 2017, as the Cowboys picked up wins on courts one and two to claim the doubles point for the 20th time this season.
"I think our energy is key in doubles," Udwadia said. "Today, we played really tough at the beginning and then were able to serve it out at the end. It was a good doubles point for us."
Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe, now ranked No. 3 in the nation, were the first to strike in doubles action on Friday, as the All-American tandem defeated Dominic Bechard and Okkie Kellerman on court one, 6-3. The win marked the 34th doubles victory for Kadhe this season, which ties his own OSU single-season record that he and Cash set last season.
Following Cash and Kadhe's win on court one, Lucas Gerch and Jurence Mendoza clinched the match's first point with a 6-4 comeback victory over Jarod Hing and Daniel Santos. Gerch and Mendoza have now won 17 matches this season as partners, which ranks as the second most by an OSU tandem this season.
Lucas Gerch tallied another win in singles action on Friday, as the senior bested Dominic Bechard in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Gerch dropped the first game of the match, but blitzed past Bechard by winning the next 12 games to give doubles the Cowboys' lead.
"Once I had won match point, the emotion of senior day kind of started to hit me," Gerch said. "I went upstairs to watch the others guys play and it was pretty tough for me. I've worked really hard over these past four years to try and win every match that I could for OSU, and I'd say it worked out pretty well."
Gerch's fellow senior, Arjun Kadhe, extended the OSU lead to 3-0 court two, where the right-hander earned his 72nd career singles win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jarod Hing. Kadhe's 72 singles wins rank as the eighth most in program history. When coupled with his 101 doubles wins, Kadhe ranks as the second-winningest Cowboy during the Big 12 era.
"The match today felt like I was in a movie," Kadhe said. "When I was sitting during the changeovers, I could hear all of the coaches from my time here talking to me. I could see myself clinching the match against Tennessee from my freshman year again. I'm so thankful that I had to opportunity to come to Oklahoma State.
"I'm really going to miss this place when my career here is over."
Julian Cash provided OSU with its clinching point shortly after Kadhe's win, as the junior overpowered Tulsa's Majed Kilani in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. The win marks Cash's team-high 18th singles triumph this season, with nine of those victories coming against ranked foes.
The Cowboys will now look ahead to next weekend, where they will make the short drive to Norman for a Bedlam matchup against No. 19 Oklahoma on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
"We've got Bedlam next, and we all know that it's always a big match on our schedule," Udwadia said. "I know that I don't have to worry about our guys getting up for them. We'll be ready to go."
The match will serve as the Cowboys' regular season finale and provide OSU with a chance to secure a first-round bye in the following week's Big 12 Championship. Oklahoma State has lost its last nine meetings with the Sooners dating back to 2009, but a Bedlam win this year could also help the Cowboys earn their first conference title since 1991.
