March 28, 2018 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's men's tennis held off Fresno State's late rally to defeat the Bulldogs, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon inside the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.Â
"It was a competitive match and I liked the way we finished it," OSU head coach Jay Udwadia said. "That's college tennis, there are some great teams. I just really liked the way we competed and finished at the end."
The No. 18 Cowboys (17-4, 0-0 Big 12) officially won the match when No. 111 Mathieu Scaglia came back to defeat Fresno State's (11-9) Zdenek Derkas in the third set, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3.Â
The Pokes started the match strong by taking the doubles point.Â
The tandem of Artur Dubinski and Leftherios Theodorou defeated Fresno State's Mantas Bugailiskis and Cem Erturk, 6-2, while Julian Cash and Mathieu Scaglia beat Zdenek Derkas and Youssef Hassan, 6-1, to give the Cowboys a 1-0 lead.Â
In singles play, Fresno State proved it was not going down quietly. The Bulldogs' Cagatay Soke defeated OSU's Brady Draheim in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.Â
The Pokes responded via Jurence Mendoza, as he beat Jeremy Moser in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Quickly thereafter, No. 83 Dubinski defeated Xander Veys, 6-2, 6-4, which brought the Cowboys within one point of winning the match.Â
However, Fresno State's Bugailiskis extended the match by beating OSU's Tristan Meraut, 6-4, 7-5.Â
It was then when Scaglia defeated Derkas to give the Pokes the 4-2 victory.Â
Udwadia, who coached eight seasons at Fresno State prior to his time in Stillwater, said he enjoyed seeing his team's competitiveness.
During his time at Fresno State, Udwadia was named WAC Coach of the Year twice (2011, 2012).Â
The Cowboys are back in action at 5:30 p.m., Friday, where they will take on the UCF Knights inside the Greenwood Tennis Center.Â
