Cowgirls Extend Winning Streak to Nine
March 14, 2019 | Cowgirl Softball
CONWAY, Ark. – The No. 18 Oklahoma State softball team extended its winning streak to nine with a run-rule win over Central Arkansas Thursday, besting the Bears, 16-1, in five innings at Farris Field.
OSU (19-5; 0-0 Big 12) is off to its best start since 2011, when the Cowgirls posted the same record through 24 games before making the program's seventh appearance in the Women's College World Series at the season's end.
"I thought it was a really good day for our offense," coach Kenny Gajewski said. "We've been working really hard on putting more balls in play on the ground, and we got that today and good things happened. When they made mistakes, we took care of that. It's good watch these kids that have been really working extremely hard and to see the fruits of their labor happening here. It's a good way to start this trip."
Samantha Show lit the offense's fuse quickly Thursday night, as she opened the scoring with a two-run home run to left center in the top of the first inning. It was Show's eighth home run of the season, which is tops among Cowgirl batters this year.
The senior, who has been a social media sensation after her bat-flip home run against No. 24 Oregon last week, finished 3-for-4 with the home run, two runs driven in and two runs scored against UCA in the midweek matchup.
Behind her, the Pokes got plenty of help as OSU racked up 20 hits in the contest. The Cowgirls' 20 hits are the most for OSU in a single game since notching 20 against Nebraska on May 2, 1997 in an 18-inning game.
Chyenne Factor and Sydney Pennington were two of the key contributors to that impressive hit total, as both notched multiple hits and drove in multiple runs.
Pennington finished 3-for-4 at the plate Thursday, with all three of her hits resulting in extra bases. Her first hit was a sharply-hit two-run home run to left field that made it a 5-1 ballgame, and she followed suit with a double to right center in her next at-bat.
In her final at-bat, Pennington hit a towering two-run blast to left field, marking her first career multi-home run game. Pennington has hit seven home runs this season, matching her total from her freshman campaign last year.
She ranks third among active Cowgirls with 14 career home runs.
Factor, meanwhile, continued to be a scorching-hot bat in the cleanup spot for Oklahoma State, as she went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI singles. The freshman from Yukon, Oklahoma, is now 14-for-21 at the plate in her last nine games. Over that stretch, she has driven in 12 runs, scored nine times, drawn five walks, logged four doubles and smacked three home runs.
In the circle, Oklahoma State was covered by five innings of work split between Samantha Clakley and Gabby Sprang. Clakley pitched the first three innings, allowing one run on one infield hit. She struck out three and faced just one above the minimum en route to earning her fourth win of the year.
Sprang allowed just one hit and struck out one in two innings of relief work. She now holds a 2.55 earned run average in 22.0 innings pitched this season.
"I think Sam has really been throwing the ball well and just continued to keep the ball down," Gajewski said. "She's been working hard trying to perfect some of her stuff and then Gabby came in there. It wasn't her best stuff, but she fought through it and got the job done. I know Coach Jeff (Cottrill) is excited about pitching with a leading and kind of being able to cruise."
Thursday's matchup in Conway marked the start of a 10-game road swing for the Pokes, which will continue this weekend in Oxford, Mississippi. There, OSU will face Ole Miss twice and Samford once before heading north to face Memphis on its home turf Monday night.
This weekend's contests against Ole Miss will be streamed on SEC Network+.
