Vocel Clinches Cowboys’ First Conference Win of the Season
April 05, 2019 | Cowboy Tennis
LUBBOCK, Texas – Oklahoma State sophomore Matej Vocel delivered a clutch performance to clinch OSU's 5-2 victory over No. 23 Texas Tech on Friday afternoon at the McLeod Tennis Center.
On court one, No. 84 Vocel bested TTU's No. 94 Parker Wynn in a third set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(7-2), to clinch the match for the Cowboys.
The No. 34 Cowboys (14-7, 1-1 Big 12) also benefited from Artur Dubinski and Luke Hammond victories to take the match.
No. 122 Dubinski dominated Tech's Ilgiz Valiev, 6-3, 6-0, while Hammond defeated Artem Kapshuk, 2-6, 7-6 (13-11), 6-3.
Emile Hudd provided the final singles point for the Cowboys, defeating Franco Ribero, 7-6, 6-7, 10-8, after Vocel had officially clinched the match.
Prior to singles, the Pokes took the doubles point as No. 38 Maxim Tybar and Mathieu Scaglia upset the No. 4-ranked doubles tandem of the nation, Bjorn Thomson/Parker Wynn of TTU, 6-3, on court one.
Shortly following, Emile Hudd and Matej Vocel, who lost a nail-biting doubles match in last week's Bedlam dual, defeated Jackson Cobb/Tommy Mylnikov, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
The Pokes extended their lead in the all-time series with the Red Raiders to 22-15 and coach Jay Udwadia improved to 5-4 against Tech.
"The team competed hard from start to finish," Udwadia said. "The Big 12 is such a tough conference so every match you have to be ready. It was a great college tennis match and I'm very proud of our team."
The match was originally scheduled for 6 p.m., but was moved to a 1 p.m. start time due to inclement weather in the area.
The Cowboys are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. as they continue their Big 12 road trip in Waco to take on the No. 7 Baylor Bears.
