Cowgirl Tennis Set For Big 12 Championships

The Basics
After closing out the regular season with victories over Kansas and Kansas State, Oklahoma State's fourth-seeded women's tennis team (14-6 overall; 7-2 Big 12) is set for a matchup in the Big 12 Championshionship quarterfinal againast fifth-seeded Texas Tech (14-9 overall; 4-5 Big 12). The Cowgirls and Red Raiders square off at 3 p.m. CT on April 21 in Lawrence, Kansas. If the Cowgirls win, they will advance to the semifinal match on Saturday, April 22.

In the Rankings
Oklahoma State checked in at No. 18 in this week's 2022-23 ITA Tennis Division 1 national women's tennis rankings. The Cowgirls have three student-athletes ranked in the ITA rankings, with senior Alana Wolfberg landing at No. 112 in singles. The Cowgirl doubles duo of Ayumi Miyamoto and Raquel Gonzalez checked in at No. 14 which is the highest ranking for OSU this season.
Series History
Oklahoma State holds a 21-15 all-time record against Texas Tech. The last matchup against the Red Raiders was on March 19, 2023 where the Cowgirls won, 5-2, at the Greenwood Tennis Center. OSU and Texas Tech also met up in the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals last year when the Cowgirls defeated the Red Raiders, 4-3.
Oklahoma State From a Distance
The 18th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirl tennis team has completed a 7-2 record in Big 12 play which is tied for the best conference record for the Cowgirls since 2018. OSU is led by Sofia Rojas and Ayumi Miyamoto who are each undefeated in singles throughout conference play. Rojas is the lone all singles leader in the Big 12 with a 8-0 record and Miyamoto is on a eleven-match winning streak in singles. In non-conference play, OSU went 7-4 to kick off the season highlighted by wins against No. 41 South Carolina and Oregon. In its conference-opening road trip, the Cowgirls beat the No. 40 Baylor Bears, 4-3. OSU moved to 9-4 on the season and added a top-15 win to its resume, taking down the 12th-ranked Texas Longhorns, 4-3, to finish off the weekend. The Cowgirls then returned home and defeated No. 61 TCU and No. 33 Texas Tech. OSU dropped a hard-fought match to tenth-ranked Iowa State but bounced back and completed its sixth sweep on the year against West Virginia, 7-0, on senior day. In the Phillips 66 Bedlam matchup, OSU fell to No. 18 Oklahoma in Norman. The Cowgirls rebounded and swept No. 22 Kansas, 4-0, before beating Kansas State in Manhattan, 4-1, to finish off the regular season.
The Cowgirls at the Big 12 Championship
OSU is on a quest for the program's third Big 12 Championship title. The Cowgirls are 29-23 at the Big 12 Championship and 13-8 all-time in the quarterfinals. OSU enters the tournament as the fourth seed. When seeded fourth, OSU is 3-1 all time. The Cowgirls also have a 1-4 record against the Red Raiders in the tournament. The last time OSU played at the Big 12 Championship, the Cowgirls fell to Texas in the semifinals, 4-1, last season. The last time OSU won the Big 12 Championship occured in 2016 when the Cowgirls defeated Texas Tech, 4-0.
