January 19, 2025 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 22 West Virginia, 30-12, on Sunday afternoon at Gallagher-Iba Arena to improve to 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in Big 12 duals. West Virginia dropped to 8-4 on the year with the loss.
With the 30-12 victory, the Pokes reached the 30-point mark for the ninth straight dual, good for the second-longest streak to begin a season in program history (first 10 in 1987-88). The performance was propelled by five bonus-point wins, bringing OSU's season bonus rate up to 48.3%. That mark would be the highest in program history if the season ended today. In addition, 8,257 fans piled into Gallagher-Iba Arena to set the venue's highest attendance of the season and raise its season average to 7,073.
"We found ourselves in some tough matches tonight," head coach David Taylor said. "It's good for our team to experience that. I think that when you wrestle for a program like Oklahoma State, you are going to get the best of everybody."
Jett Strickenberger gave the Mountaineers an early lead with a pin of Troy Spratley at 125 pounds, but Oklahoma State bounced back quickly as Cael Hughes secured a 9-6 win over Tommy Maddox in sudden victory and improved his record to 8-0. Tagen Jamison followed suit at 141 pounds as he majored No. 29 Jordan Titus, 14-4, through a takedown in the match's final second. The win bumped Jamison's record to 15-1 and was his 11th bonus-point effort of the season, tied for most on the team.
West Virginia took the lead right back as Sam Hillegas defeated Cutter Sheets in a tight 8-6 bout. At 157 pounds, Caleb Fish sent the Cowboys into intermission with an 11-9 lead thanks to a 16-3 major decision over Sasha Gavronsky. The score was extended by nine third-period points from Fish, who has now won 10 of his last 11 matches.
The Mountaineers yet again regained the lead following the break as No. 3 Peyton Hall downed Cameron Amine, 5-1, in a rematch of the CKLV Invitational finals. Oklahoma State then regained a lead it would never surrender, however, following domination from the back half of the lineup.
Dean Hamiti Jr. was methodical in his 19-3 dismantling of No. 29 Brody Conley at 174 pounds. Through 14 matches as a Cowboy, Hamiti has taken down nine ranked wrestlers and scored bonus points 11 times. Dustin Plott put on a similar show at 184 pounds, beating No. 17 Dennis Robin by a 19-4 technical fall in 4:43. Notably, the technical fall was Plott's 18th of his career, moving him into the program's all-time top 10.
In a tight match at 197 pounds, Luke Surber scored a takedown with a minute remaining and rode Ian Bush out for the final 60 seconds, giving him the 6-5 win with riding time. Superstar heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson then wasted no time against Michael Wolfgram, sending the crowd home early through a 43-second pin. The final four weight classes have been a key piece to OSU's 9-0 start, having not lost a single dual match thus far.
The Cowboys now hit the road for two big tests this weekend, first at No. 5 Northern Iowa on Friday, January 24, and at No. 13 Iowa State two days later. Sunday's dual against the Cyclones will be broadcast on ESPN at 4 p.m.
