STILLWATER – Oklahoma State extended its winning streak to five with a 5-1 victory over Sam Houston in Friday's series opener at O'Brate Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 6-3, while the Bearkats fell to 4-5.
Hudson Barrett took the mound to begin the series for the Cowboys, making his third start of the season. The transfer had a career-day on the mound, pitching seven innings while striking out 10 – both career highs – and allowing just one unearned run to improve to 2-1.
Noah Wech came in to finish game for the Pokes, striking out four hitters over the final two innings to seal the win.
Sebastian Norman and Brock Thompson both went deep on the day, driving in four of the Cowboy's five runs.
Barrett looked sharp in the first inning, working a clean inning that included a pair of strike outs. He went on to retire the first seven batters he faced before SHSU's Blake Brown reached on an error to put a man on second with one out in the third. But the southpaw was able to induce a couple of fly outs to escape any damage and finish his third scoreless inning
On the other side, SHSU starter Ryan Peterson faced the minimum through two innings before allowing a leadoff walk to Evan Saunders in the bottom of the third. Terrance Bowen followed suit with another walk to put Cowboys on first and second with nobody out. After Brady Francisco laid down a textbook bunt to put two runners in scoring position for the top of the order, Alex Conover drove in the first run of the game with a groundout to short.
The Bearkats got their first hit of the game when Hunter Alvord led off the fourth with a single. Alvord would advance to third base with one out on an error, but Barrett was able to strand him with a strikeout and fly out to end the inning.
The Pokes finally got in the hit column in the fifth after Saunders legged out an infield single. Bowen and Francisco each followed with singles of their own to load the bases with one out. But Peterson struck out the next two batters to bring his tally to 11 and end the threat.
Barrett continued his dominance in the sixth inning, striking out three to give him nine on the day.
In the bottom of the inning, Norman provided a big swing with a line drive home run over the left field wall. It was the freshman's second home run of the season.
Barrett returned to the mound in the seventh and picked up his 10th strikeout of the game to set a new standard. Sean Bazmore reached on a two-out single but was erased by a Barrett pick-off move.
The Cowboys started a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a pair of singles from Francisco and Conover. With two on and two out, Thompson sent a ball over the right-center field wall to give the Pokes three big insurance runs and make it a 5-0 game.
Barrett came out to start the eighth inning, but a pair of defensive miscues to open the inning forced the lefty out of the game with two runners on.
Wech entered the game and walked one while also throwing a wild pitch to allow one of the inherited runners to score. But the right-hander struck out the final two batters of the inning to limit the damage and preserve the four-run lead.
Wech worked an easy ninth inning, striking out to two to seal the victory.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m.
