PROVO, Utah – Oklahoma State dropped a 6-5 contest to BYU in 10 innings Thursday night at Miller Park.
With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 16-10 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 play, while BYU is now 12-12 and 3-4 in the league.
Sebastian Norman and Alex Conover each had two hits for OSU, with five different players driving in runs for the Pokes.
Ethan Lund was again strong on the mound, working a career-long seven innings and striking out 11; it was the fourth time in seven starts the Big 12 leader in strikeouts has recorded double digits. The southpaw allowed four runs on six hits.
Noah Wech took the loss on the mound to fall to 2-2 as he allowed two runs on four hits while picking up four strikeouts over the final 2 2/3 innings.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early lead with a two-out rally in the first inning. Aidan Meola brought home the first run with a double into the left-center field gap, and following a walk, Norman and Colin Brueggemann delivered back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 3-0.
BYU cut into the lead in the third on a solo home run by Tu'alau Wolfgramm, but the Pokes answered in their next at bat.
And it was another two-out RBI, this one off the bat of Conover, whose single plated Brueggemann from second. The hit also extended Conover's streak of reaching base safely to 23 games.
BYU rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth to cut the OSU lead to one. Wolfgramm brought home the first run with a single before a single by Ezra McNaughton made the score 4-3.
But with two runners on, Lund escaped further damage with an inning-ending strikeout to keep the lead intact.
OSU got a run back in the sixth. After a double by TP Wentworth put a pair of runners in scoring position, Garrett Shull lifted a fly ball to left field to bring Brueggemann home as the Pokes went up 5-3.
The Cougars answered in the bottom of the inning, trimming their deficit to 5-4 on an RBI single.
OSU clung to the one-run advantage until the ninth. With two outs, Wolfgramm singled, and Luke Anderson then tripled to tie the score before a strikeout sent the game to extra innings.
In the 10th, Wech retired the first two BYU hitters before Easton Jones hit a walk-off home run to left field.
The two teams return to action Friday at 7 p.m. (CDT).
