STILLWATER – Oklahoma State clinched its weekend series against Gardner-Webb with a 16-1 run-rule win in Sunday's rubber game at O'Brate Stadium.
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 11-4, while the Runnin' Bulldogs fell to 10-6.
Kollin Ritchie continued his scorching start to the season, homering twice in the contest and driving in five. It was his third multi-home run game of the season, and he now has 11 round trippers on the year.
Colin Bruggemann also had a big day, hitting a three-run home run as part of his own three-hit, five-RBI game.
Mario Pesca made his fourth start of the season for the Cowboys and pitched all seven innings of one-run baseball while striking out five to earn his first win of the season.
Pesca allowed three baserunners in the first inning, but a double play and strikeout prevented any damage.
The OSU offense burst onto the scene in the first inning, with the first five hitters reaching base safely. Alex Conover led off the game with a single and was followed by Brock Thompson, who drew a walk. Ritchie then provided a big swing, smacking his 10th home run of the season to jump the Pokes out in front, 3-0. After a pair of walks to Aidan Meola and Deacon Pomeroy, Brueggemann lifted a high fly ball to the opposite field that carried over the wall for the Cowboys' second three-run home run of the inning to make it a 6-0 game.
It was more of the same for Ritchie in the second inning as he smoked a ball that hit off the top of the batter's eye for his second home run in as many innings. The two-run shot brought Ritchie, who entered the weekend leading the nation in RBIs, to 31 on the season.
Pesca settled in after the first inning and ended the top of the third with a strike-'em-out, throw-'em-out double play, with Campbell Smithwick erasing the runner trying to steal second base.
The Cowboys' third three-run home run of the game came in the fourth inning, this time off the bat of Meola to put the Pokes up 11-0. The ball banged off the scoreboard in left field for Meola's sixth homer of the season.
OSU put together its fourth multi-run inning in the fifth, scoring five more times to make it 16-0. The Pokes loaded the bases with a TP Wentworth double and a pair of walks before Meola drew another walk to plate Wentworth. Sebastian Norman and Brueggemann each had RBI singles as well.
Pesca looked destined for a seven-inning shutout, but Joe Stanzione delivered GWU's lone run of the game with a home run to left-centerfield.
OSU concludes its nine-game homestand Tuesday when the Cowboys host Dallas Baptist. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
