Cowboy Baseball Falls In Series Finale

With the loss, the Cowboys fell to 24-16 overall and 8-10 in the Big 12, while Kansas improved to 29-11 and 14-4 in the league.
Brennan Phillips got the start for the Cowboys and worked 4 2/3 innings, striking out four and allowing four runs. Drew Blake took the loss in relief to fall to 0-1 on the season.
Danny Wallace hit his second home run of the year for the Cowboys, and Alex Conover, Kollin Ritchie and Garrett Shull all had multiple hits.
OSU struck first, scoring a run in the opening inning courtesy of an Aidan Meola RBI groundout.
Kansas responded, evening the score at 1-1 in the second. The Jayhawks loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk before another walk brought home the tying run.
The Pokes went back on top in the third on Wallace's solo blast to right field and added two more runs in the fourth on a single by Conover to go up 4-1.
The scoreboard swung in KU's favor in the fifth. With two outs and runners on the corners, an infield single brought home the Jayhawks' second run. After Blake came in and walked the lone batter he faced to load the bases, Kai Fyke surrendered a grand slam to Dariel Osoria to put the visitors on top.
Trailing 6-4 in the seventh, the Cowboys cut their deficit to one on a two-out RBI double by Campbell Smithwick.
KU got the run back off reliever Hudson Barrett in the eighth, then extended its lead to 9-5 with a pair of runs in the ninth.
In the ninth, OSU rallied for a run on an RBI double off the bat of Ritchie, but three consecutive strikeouts ended the game.
The Cowboys return to action Tuesday when they host Wichita State. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at O'Brate Stadium.
