Cowboy Baseball Falls To ORU
April 07, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
The loss snapped the Pokes' four-game winning streak as they fell to 21-12, while ORU improved to 18-12. It was only the third loss at home this season for OSU.
Colin Brueggemann remained hot at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a home run, his sixth in the last five games, while Alex Conover had a pair of hits.
OSU used six pitchers in the contest. TP Wentworth made the start and tallied a career-high six strikeouts while allowing just one earned run in four innings.
Noah Wech took the loss to fall to 2-4 on the season as he allowed two runs on two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
The Golden Eagles struck early as Makani Tanaka hit a two-run home run before Wentworth was able to record an out in the first inning.
OSU got a run back in the bottom of the first on a two-out home run from Kollin Ritchie, his 19th of the season. Ritchie entered the game third nationally in homers, just two behind the NCAA leader.
Wentworth struck out two in the second inning following a leaping grab at the wall by Conover in left field, preventing ORU's second home run in as many innings.
The Pokes tied the game in the third on Brock Thompson's fifth home run of the season, a blast into the bleachers in right-center field.
ORU reclaimed the lead in the fourth, scoring on a two-out error in right field. For Wentworth, it was the second unearned run that came across the plate.
Avery Ortiz started a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame, knocking a double in his first game since February 14. Ortiz came across to score on an RBI single off the bat of Garrett Shull, tying the game. The next batter, Brady Francisco, lifted his first home run of the season to left field to give the Cowboys a 5-3 lead.
That lead didn't last long as ORU came back with a three-run fifth inning to go back on top, 6-5.
Stormy Rhodes finished the fifth and pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, striking out one. The Pokes loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning on a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch but did not score.
Brennan Phillips replaced Rhodes in the seventh inning and worked a clean frame with one strikeout.
The Cowboys strung together the tying-run in the seventh after Ritchie led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. He would come around to score after a passed ball and throwing error.
The score shifted again in eighth as ORU scored a pair off of Phillips, including a go-ahead solo home run from Kole Dudding.
The Pokes loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth and tied the score on a sacrifice fly from Ritchie and a wild pitch that scored Conover.
Wech had the assignment in the ninth and was a strike away from ending the inning before Hudson Ellis smacked a two-run double to give ORU the lead once more.
The Golden Eagles deployed Jack Hill in the bottom of the ninth, and Brueggemann greeted him with an opposite-field home run to make the score 10-9.
Wentworth followed with a single up the middle, and Remo Indomenico reached on a sac bunt and fielder's choice after pinch-runner Ezra Essex beat the throw to second base. Shull then laid down a sac bunt to put runners at second and third.
With the winning tying and winning runs in scoring position, pinch-hitter Campbell Smithwick couldn't bring Essex home safely on a ground ball to second as he was cut down at the plate. With two outs and the tying run 90 feet away, Conover struck out to end the game.
OSU returns to action Friday when the Cowboys open a weekend series at Kansas State.
