May 21, 2026 | Cowboy Baseball
SURPRISE, Ariz. – A five-run eighth inning fueled Oklahoma State's 12-6 win over UCF in the Big 12 Tournament quarterfinals Thursday at Surprise Stadium.
With the win, the 19th-ranked Cowboys, the tourney's No. 5 seed, improved to 37-19 on the season, while fourth-seeded UCF fell to 31-21.
OSU advances to Friday's semifinal round and will face top-seeded Kansas at 6:30 p.m. (CDT).
Colin Brueggemann led OSU with a four-RBI day against the Knights and was one of five Cowboys with two hits in the contest. With his performance, Brueggemann now has 200 career RBIs, which ranks 10th on the program's all-time list.
Mario Pesca picked up the win in relief of starter Hudson Barrett to improve to 6-4 on the season. The right-hander worked three innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out four.
OSU jumped out to an early lead as Alex Conover led off the game with a single and later scored on a two-out RBI single by Campbell Smithwick to put the Pokes up 1-0 in the first.
The Knights tied the game in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on a double, hit batter and walk before a fielder's choice brought home a run to make the score 1-1.
The Cowboys went back on top in the fourth. Brueggemann led off the frame with a double, and Garrett Shull brought him home with a single. OSU then took a 3-1 advantage on a two-out RBI infield single off the bat of Brock Thompson.
OSU extended its lead in the fifth. After back-to-back walks to open the inning, a bunt single and throwing error brought home a run before a Brueggemann sacrifice fly made the score 5-1.
UCF erased its deficit in the bottom of the inning with a two-out rally. After an RBI double brought home their second run, the Knights got a three-run homer from Javier Crespo to knot the score up at 5-5.
The decisive inning came in the eighth as the Cowboys sent nine batters to the plate in the five-run rally.
With the bases loaded following an intentional walk to Kollin Ritchie, Aidan Meola drew a walk to bring home the go-ahead run. After a sacrifice fly by Smithwick put the Pokes up two, they loaded the bases again. This time, Brueggemann cleared them with a three-RBI single to right-center field as OSU took a 10-5 lead.
OSU added its final runs in the ninth, one of those coming on an RBI triple by Conover.
Down to its final three outs, UCF loaded the bases with no outs off Noah Wech following two singles and a walk, but the righty got an out on an infield fly before a double play ended the game.
