Gfeller Takes Southern Scuffle Title
Â
The Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up its final day at the Southern Scuffle Tuesday with a tournament champion, as freshman Kaden Gfeller locked up the 141-pound title with a fall in 4:50 against fellow freshman Nick Lee of Penn State.
Â
The match got off to a quick start with Gfeller scoring a takedown in the first five seconds, but he gave up an escape and two takedowns to trail going into the second period. Lee would get a two-point nearfall before giving up a penalty point and allowing Gfeller the reversal. The Cowboy took advantage and put Lee on his back for 20 seconds before grinding out his second fall in the tournament.
Â
Gfeller knocked off Lehigh's second-seeded Luke Karam earlier in the day with a 2-1 decision on his way to the finals matchup. The Cowboy gave up an escape in the second period but scored a takedown and held on for the final 45 seconds for the win.
Â
Cowboy Gary Wayne Harding also reached the tournament final at 133 pounds, but dropped the title bout to Virginia's second-seeded Jack Mueller, 10-0.
Â
In the semifinals, unseeded Harding maintained his top position through the entire second period against unattached Colby Smith. Harding gave up two points with a technical violation and a stalling call in the third but found his way off the bottom to get a reversal with about a minute to go. Riding time would prove to be the difference in his 3-2 victory.
Â
Weigel's Return
Â
2017 All-American Preston Weigel made his return to the OSU lineup on the Cowboys' December road trip to Wyoming and Northern Colorado earlier this month. Weigel was impressive in his first weekend back, defeating Cody Vigoren and Jacob Seeley by a combined score of 22-0.
Â
Weigel continued his impressive return in the Pokes' win over No. 5 NC State in Italy, knocking off No. 7 Mike Macchiavello, 5-4, to help OSU snag the win.
Â
HeavyWHITE
Â
Moving up from 197 pounds this season, Derek White has proven himself a formidable answer for the Cowboys at heavyweight for the 2017-18 campaign.
Â
White is 12-1 so far for his redshirt junior season to go along with six dual wins, three tech falls and a team-leading six major decisons. He has already racked up a couple of top-20 wins as well. Last month at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, White notched a 12-1 major decision over No. 9 Thomas Haines of Lock Haven and a 3-2 decision over No. 20 Jordan Wood of Lehigh. In fact, the Edmond, Okla., product's only loss came in a 1-0 decision to No. 11 Mike Hughes of Hofstra.
