OSU Defeats Kentucky to Advance to Championship Match
January 27, 2018 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State defeated Kentucky in a nail biting match on Saturday where junior Artur Dubinski sealed the win for the Cowboys with a thrilling third set, tiebreak victory.
Dubinski won the first set against No. 77 Trey Yates of Kentucky in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-2). The Belarus native then dropped the second set, 3-6. With Cowboys leading only leading by one point, 3-2, one more singles win for OSU would secure a spot in the championship match on Sunday. Dubinski then surged back in the third set to secure the winning point for the Cowboys, 7-6 (8-6).
"For this early in the season, to have a nail-biter like that, I think it's really going to help," Coach Jay Udwadia said. "It could've gone either way, I'm really happy that the Pokes prevailed and pushed through. I'm really happy for Artur to get that win underneath him. I liked the team spirit, great first match, first nail-biter for us."
The Pokes started out the match quickly winning the doubles point to take the lead, 1-0.
Dubinski and Eleftherious Theodorou got the first win defeating Will Bushamuka and Ryotaro Matsumura, 6-2.
That win was quickly followed on court one by Julian Cash and Luke Hammond who dropped Enzo Wallart and Cesar Bourgois, 6-3, to earn the doubles point for OSU.
Singles action followed as senior Jurence Mendoza defeated Austin Hussey in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3 giving OSU a 2-0 lead.
Cash was soon to follow as he defeated No. 84 Will Bushamuka in straight sets 6-3, 7-5. This put the Cowboys up, 3-2, but the clinching doubles point would not come until Dubinski's three-set thriller.
Tristan Meraut fell to No. 34 Ryotaro Matsumura, 6-4, 6-4, and No. 93 Mathieu Scaglia suffered his first loss of the dual season to Enzo Wallart, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6.
The Cowboys will face No. 13 Mississippi State Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The winner of this match will advance to the ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championship, Feb. 16-19 in Seattle.
