OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 24 Oklahoma State softball team extended its winning streak to 10 on Sunday, as the Cowgirls bested Pacific, 11-1, in a run-rule victory to close out the OSU Hall of Fame Classic at OGE Energy Field.
Oklahoma State now sits at 19-6 on the year and its 10-game winning streak is the squad's longest since a 12-game run in March 2013.
"I thought it was a good performance for us. It has been a long weekend and I thought we came out and just had good at-bats all day long," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I thought Emmie (Robertson) was good, but not as sharp as I've seen her. She was good enough and continued to make pitches. She left the one ball up that she got punished on, but other than that it was a very well-played game."
Vanessa Shippy was once again the anchor of the OSU lineup, as she led off the game with a six-pitch walk. Shippy has reached base to open the game in eight of the last 10 contests, walking on six of those occasions.
The left-handed hitter immediately took off for second with Taylor Lynch at the plate, swiping the 51st base of her OSU career. She ranks fourth in school history and is the program's active leader in career stolen bases.
Lynch would move Shippy to third on a short grounder back to the pitcher, and the senior darted home two pitches later after a wild pitch sailed over the catcher at home plate. Shippy's run marked the third-straight game that OSU scored in the first inning. With Sunday's victory, the Cowgirls are now 15-2 this season when scoring the game's first run.
Shippy's impressive day at the plate continued in the second inning when she blasted a two-RBI double over the center fielder with the bases loaded. Her double was by a pair of doubles from Lynch and Madi Sue Montgomery, with Lynch's scoring two more Cowgirls and increasing OSU's lead to 5-0.
Mackenzie Thomas also laced a double of her own to right center in the third inning, as Oklahoma State finished Sunday's contest with a season-high four doubles.
In the bottom of the fourth and fifth, Shippy again stepped to the plate and again drew a walk. She walked 10 times this weekend and reached base in her final 13 plate appearances. Her slash line for the year now stands at an eye-popping .561/.717/.895.
"We go as she goes," Gajewski said of Shippy. "She's been on base in 13 straight appearances - that's crazy. You just don't see that kind of stuff, and a lot of those are walks. She's in a good spot, is seeing the ball well and swings at strikes. When she doesn't get on base, it's weird, to be honest."
The Cowgirls put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, two of which came from Chelsea Alexander's base-loaded single up the middle. OSU added three more in the home half of the fifth thanks to Taylor Lynch's walk-off three-run home run.
In the circle, Emmie Robertson pitched a complete game to improve to 7-3 on the year. She allowed just one run on two hits and struck out three in Sunday's contest.
Oklahoma State will return to action quickly, as the Cowgirls compete in a pair of midweek contests on Tuesday and Wednesday. First, OSU will host Illinois State at Cowgirl Stadium on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and then will travel to Conway, Arkansas, on Wednesday for a meeting with Central Arkansas.
