STILLWATER – The No. 23 Oklahoma State softball team opened Big 12 play with an impressive 8-1 victory over Iowa State at Cowgirl Stadium on Friday.
OSU (22-7; 1-0 Big 12) has now won 13 of its last 14 games and the Cowgirls have also bested Iowa State (17-17; 0-1 Big 12) in 11 of their last 13 meetings with the Cyclones.
"It's conference play and it's the second season," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I was pumped and I kind of pumped my fist a little bit when we scored early because I know how important every run is in conference play. I felt good and it made me feel good because we got a little room to breathe. Sam (Clakley) was throwing the ball well and she got stronger as the game went on."
Vanessa Shippy opened the Cowgirls' efforts at the plate on Friday with a leadoff single back through the middle. Shippy has now reached base as the leadoff batter in 12 of OSU's last 14 contests. She currently leads the Big 12 in batting average (.557) and on-base percentage (.701), among other categories.
Later in the first inning, Whitney Whitehorn stepped up to bat with the bases loaded.
The senior delivered on her early chance, as she smoked a ball over the left-field fence to record her second grand slam of the season. Coupled with her grand slam on March 2, Whitehorn's first-inning shot made her the first Cowgirl to record multiple grand slams in a season since Julie Ward hit three in 2010.
Whitehorn's grand slam also marked the 17th time this season that OSU has scored in the first inning. Including Friday's victory over the Cyclones, the Cowgirls have posted a 16-1 record in those instances this season.
"All year, Coach G has told me to shorten up and not swing so hard because I tend to overswing," Whitehorn said. "There, I was just trying to get my pitch and hit it. I was trying to work in between the lightpoles. That's something we work on at practice and obviously it wasn't in between the lightpoles, but it was a great outcome."
Oklahoma State added a fifth run to its tally in the third inning, thanks to a pair of hits from the heart of the batting order. Madi Sue Montgomery provided the first, as she skied a double to right center to leadoff the inning. Sydney Pennington followed Montgomery's double with a line drive to left center that nearly cleared the wall.
Pennington's ball was hit so hard that it quickly ricocheted to the center fielder and prevented the freshman from taking second base, but it was still good enough to drive home Montgomery from second.
The Cowgirls' offense added three more runs, all of which came in the fifth inning.
Shippy and Taylor Lynch provided two of those fifth-inning scores, as they both notched two-out hits - Shippy's a single and Lynch's a double. Shippy finished Friday's action 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored, one run batted in and one walk.
Samantha Clakley handled duties in the circles for OSU. She allowed just one run in a complete-game performance en route to earning her eighth win of the season.
"I thought she pitched really well," Gajewski said. "She's got such a crazy movement on her ball - late action - that sometimes kids can just pop balls in and out. I didn't feel like they hit too many balls hard and I felt like she was good. We have to get the illegal pitch deal cleaned up because she had to work way too hard. But I was looking at her box and she only threw 83 pitches in seven innings. That's really good and it's exciting."
OSU will continue its weekend series with Iowa State tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m before wrapping up the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
