STILLWATER — Oklahoma State defeated a ranked opponent for the second time this season Thursday night as the 25th-ranked Cowgirls bested No. 21 Kansas, 5-2, at Neal Patterson Stadium.
OSU's five goals were its most against a Big 12 opponent since Sept. 23, 2011, when the Cowgirls defeated Kansas 5-1.
The win marked the first of the season for the Cowgirls in conference play as they improved to 8-1-3 overall and 1-1-1 in Big 12 play. OSU also remained undefeated at home, moving to 6-0-1.
Charmé Morgan led OSU with a pair of goals, her second brace of the season, while Camy Huddleston, Julia Lenhardt and Gabriella Coleman also found the back of the net for the home team.
The first goal of the match came in the 10th minute off a corner kick from Jaci Jones as Huddleston headed the ball off a Kansas defender and into the net. The assist was one of two on the night for Jones, bringing her season total to nine, while Huddleston's goal was her second of the year.
The Cowgirls would continue scoring in the first half. In the 28th minute, after her initial shot was deflected off a teammate, Morgan smacked the rebound to the far post to put OSU up 2-0.
Minutes later, OSU made it 3-0 off a set piece. A free kick by Jones from just outside the box carried to Yochum, who crossed the ball to Lenhardt. The Cowgirls' senior captain headed the ball to the far post for her second goal of the year.
Leading 3-0 at intermission, OSU pushed its lead to four early in the second half. After Olyvia Dowell wove her way into the box, Morgan smacked a shot that KU goalie Sarah Peters saved but could not control. Morgan collected the ball and would not miss again as she found the net for her second goal of the night and fifth of the season.
The Jayhawks wouldn't go away quietly, however. Just 30 seconds after Morgan's goal, Ceri Holland would follow up a miss from teammate Katie McClure to get KU on the board and cut the Cowgirl lead to 4-1.
Kansas scored again in the 61st minute to cut the OSU lead in half as Mandi Duggan tallied a long-distance goal to make the score 4-2.
But the Cowgirls would respond and put the game away in the 71st minute when Coleman went on a solo run, weaving through a pair of Jayhawk defenders and finishing a one-on-one opportunity against Peters for her third goal of the season and a 5-2 OSU advantage.
KU (9-4-0, 1-2-0) finished the match with a 14-13 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Making her third start of the season in goal for the Cowgirls, Hannah Warner posted five saves.
OSU returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when the Cowgirls host Kansas State.
