The Basics
The seventh-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team (1-1; 0-0 Big 12) hosts a classic Big 12/Big Ten matchup Sunday against the No. 12 Minnesota Golden Gophers at 2 p.m. CST. The Cowboys opened the season at Drexel with a 30-6 victory over the Dragons before dropping a close, 21-20, dual to 10th-ranked Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. OSU hasn't lost back-to-back duals since the beginning of the 2013-14 season.
The Series
Oklahoma State holds a 26-14-0 all-time record against Minnesota. Of the 26 wins, 19 have come during the John Smith era, with OSU claiming the four most recent meetings between the programs. In 2018, OSU took seven of 10 matches and defeated then 13th-ranked Minnesota on the road in Maturi Pavillion, 23-3, in its second dual of the year. The most recent dual between the Cowboys and Gophers inside Gallagher-Iba resulted in a 30-3 victory for the Pokes. Brandon Eggum is 0-3 against the Cowboys in his three seasons at Minnesota, with the closest contest taking place a year ago in Minneapolis. Minnesota comes to Stillwater a week after an upset loss to unranked Rider at home, and the Pokes look to rebound from a tough loss at Lehigh. This dual marks the 34th time in 24 seasons that the two programs have met.
About the Cowboys
Last week's wins for No. 4 Nick Piccininni gave him 89 career wins as a staple in the Cowboy lineup. He looks to become the 44th wrestler in program history to reach the 100-win milestone. The redshirt senior has won each of his five matches this season with bonus points attached. Joining Piccininni in the rankings is redshirt sophomore Kaden Gfeller. No. 10. Gfeller hasn't wrestled for the Pokes yet this season but could make his debut at 141 pounds on Sunday against Minnesota.
Entering the rankings for the first time in his career this week is redshirt freshman Anthony Montalvo. The 184-pounder took out both his opponents last weekend, picking up a crucial pin for OSU against Lehigh. He lands at No. 18 this week (Intermat) and has won each of his matches on the year via major decision, technical fall or pin.
With Montalvo scoring a ranking at 184 pounds for the Pokes, All-American Dakota Geer shifted to the 197-pound rankings landing as Intermat'seighth ranked wrestler at the weight. After upsetting Drexel's No. 10 Ebed Jarrell, Travis Wittlake climbed five spots to No. 15 at 165 pounds.
Seniors Boo Lewallen (149) and Joe Smith (174) hold steady in the rankings this week coming in at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively. Lewallen has won all but one of his bouts with bonus points attached, and along with Geer, leads the Cowboys in wins via major decision. He has a test this weekend against Minnesota in No. 10 Brayton Lee.
Reece Witcraft (133), Dusty Hone (141) and Austin Harris (HWT) made their dual debuts for OSU in Pennsylvania. Hone went 1-1 on the weekend with Witcraft dropping his lone bout and Harris losing his matches. Senior Andrew Shomers filled in at 174 pounds and also went 1-1 in the Cowboys' opening weekend of dual action. After losing to Lehigh's No. 13 Josh Humphreys, Wyatt Sheet was taken out of the Intermat poll.
400 and Counting
In 2018, coach John Smith assumed the title of winningest active head coach in NCAA Division I wrestling when OSU defeated Minnesota on Nov. 19, inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. Since that time, Smith has added 27 more victories to the record books. The Cowboy dual win at Drexel tied Smith for fifth place on the list along with former Cowboy Bobby Douglas. With seven home duals slated for the 2019-20 season, the Cowboys have ample opportunity to reach the 500-win milestone on the home mat.

This week's Cowboy lineup could feature as many as three freshman wrestlers, including true freshman Reece Witcraft at 133 pounds. Witcraft won the OCU Open to start the year before dropping a decision at Drexel on Nov. 15. Additionally, redshirt freshmen Montalvo and Wittlake will start for the Pokes. They went a combined 4-0 last weekend outscoring their opponents, 22-5, not including the 17 points Montalvo racked up before pinning his opponent at Lehigh.
