Cowboys Nearly Upset No. 1 Texas
April 12, 2019 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State's men's tennis team nearly achieved a historic upset, before falling to No. 1 Texas, 4-3, Friday night at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
"We're not happy losing, but it has been a great couple of weeks here," OSU head coach Jay Udwadia said. "The competitiveness and the team chemistry are coming together. We are very close. We just got to push through to the finish line."
The No. 26 Cowboys (14-9, 1-3 Big 12) took the doubles point behind the tandems of Emile Hudd/Matej Vocel and Luke Hammond/Brady Draheim.
Vocel and Hudd bested Leonardo Telles and Colin Markes, 6-3, on court two, while Hammond and Draheim defeated Chih Chi Huang and Yuya Ito on court three, 7-5, to clinch the doubles point.
However, Texas quickly claimed a 3-1 match lead with singles victories from No. 7 Yuya Ito, Colin Markes and No. 50 Harrison Scott.
But the Cowboys wouldn't go away. No. 76 Vocel paced the Pokes with an electric performance on court one, where he upset No. 8 Christian Sigsgaard, 6-3, 7-5.
"I am very happy for the win because he is a top 10 player in college," Vocel said. "I had a good game today playing fast balls and blocking, so it was a good game for me and I'm happy for it."
Draheim, playing in his first match since March 15, followed with a clutch 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, win over Texas' Rodrigo Banzer, to tie the match at three. It all came down to the court three matchup between Mathieu Scaglia and No. 73 Leonardo Telles.
Despite forcing a third set, Scaglia fell to Telles, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, and Texas claimed the match.
A victory would've given the Cowboys their first win over an Oracle/ITA No. 1 team in the Big 12 era, and would've been their highest-ranked victory since beating No. 2 Tennessee in 2001.
With one regular season match remaining, the Cowboys are one win away from the 15-win plateau they've reached for each of the past five seasons.
The Cowboys are back in action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they will take on the No. 10 TCU Horned Frogs on senior day at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
