STILLWATER – Oklahoma State dropped its first match on its home field this season with a 3-0 setback against No. 8 BYU Thursday at Neal Patterson Stadium.
With the loss, the Cowgirls fell to 11-6-0 and 4-4-0 in Big 12 play, while BYU improved to 12-1-3 and 5-0-3 in the conference. OSU is now 8-1-0 at home on the year.
OSU outshot the Cougars 22-13 in the match; BYU, who leads the NCAA in goals, entered the game second nationally with an average of just over 22 shots per game.
An early OSU foul in the 18-yard box saw BYU earn a penalty kick in the ninth minute, and Brecken Mozingo converted the attempt to give the Cougars an early lead.
The Cowgirls nearly found the equalizer in the 21st minute on a long header by Hannah Chance that deflected off the left woodwork and out of harm's way.
BYU doubled its lead in the 35th minute on Ellie Walbruch's seventh goal of the season, and the Cougars took the 2-0 advantage into the break.
With a strong wind behind them, OSU outshot the Cougars 14-5 in the opening half and had three corner kick opportunities.
A quiet start to the second half came to a halt when Allie Fryer dribbled past OSU keeper Grace Gordon on a breakaway in the 68th minute and converted the open net chance to extend the Cougars' lead to 3-0.
The Cowgirls return to action Sunday with a road match at league-leading Texas Tech. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
