Cowboys Stay Undefeated with 28-9 Rout of Sun Devils
February 02, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State wrestling team routed No. 24 Arizona State, 28-9, Friday night at Gallagher-Iba Arena to keep its undefeated season intact at 11-0. With the loss, Arizona State fell to 3-5.
The Cowboys picked up five bonus-point wins on the night, matching their season-high set against both Bucknell and Pittsburgh. Now sitting at 11-0 for the first time since 2019, Oklahoma State is one of just two undefeated teams remaining in the country.
Oklahoma State has now defeated a ranked opponent in seven straight duals and owns nine ranked victories on the season. In addition, OSU is 12-1 in its last 13 duals against ranked teams and won 16 of its last 17 overall. With the win, head coach John Smith trails Harold Nichols by just five victories at 487 for second-most in Division I wrestling history.
"(Troy) Spratley fell into a couple of situations there that he didn't create," coach Smith said. "I'd love to see him go out there and create those situations, but he went out there and found a way to get some points to win. Daton (Fix) needs to push through when it's hard to score… Those matches prepare you the NCAA Championships when things get tight… Liked what I saw from Brayden Thompson and Dustin Plott. Thompson goes and gets three takedowns, and Plott goes out and gets the pin. Good to see Luke (Surber) back after some injuries."
For the second dual in a row, the Cowboys jumped out to an early lead behind wins at the first three weight classes.
At 125 pounds, Troy Spratley opened the night in a tight matchup against No. 11 Richard Figueroa. Spratley trailed early in the second period, but executed a six-point move and tacked on in the third to earn a 13-5 major decision. The redshirt freshman has won his last seven matches, with five of those victories coming against ranked opponents. Daton Fix extended the Cowboy lead with a 5-3 decision over No. 26 Julian Chlebove before Tagen Jamison cemented a 16-5 major decision against Cody Foote.
With the Cowboys holding an 11-0 lead, Jordan Williams and Teague Travis each dropped tight decisions to a pair of fourth-ranked wrestlers. Izzak Olejnik then got OSU back on track at 165 pounds, shutting Chance McLane out in a 5-0 decision.
Three straight bonus-point wins by Brayden Thompson, Dustin Plott and Luke Surber then iced the team win for Oklahoma State. Thompson scored five points in the third period en route to his 11-2 major decision over Cael Valencia, while Dustin Plott made quick work of Max Wilner, earning the pin in just 2:33.
After battling injuries throughout recent weeks, 197-pounder Luke Surber looked like his usual self, defeating Jacob Meissner by major decision, 17-4. The strong performance marked Surber's third dual win of the season and eighth time securing bonus points in 12 matches.
On Sunday, the Cowboys will take on fifth-ranked Missouri in Columbia, Mo., for its final road dual of the season. Oklahoma State is looking for its third top-five win of the season for the first time since 2012. The dual is slated for 1 p.m. and will be available for streaming on FloWrestling.
