Â
Opening Tips:
- Oklahoma State head coach Steve Lutz goes head-to-head with his former team, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, on Sunday afternoon inside historic Gallagher-Iba Arena.
- The Cowboys are 3-0 for the second straight season under Lutz and are looking to reach 4-0 for the first time since the 2020-21 season when Cade Cunningham and company started the year with six consecutive victories.
- The Cowboys' run of three-straight 20+ point wins is their longest since November 2014 and the fourth such streak to start a season.
- In Wednesday night's 94-67 win over Prairie View A&M, sophomore guard Vyctorius Miller scored a career-high 30 points on just 12 shots. The LSU transfer is averaging a team-best 22.0 points (33.6 points per 40 minutes).
- In addition to Miller, four other Cowboys are averaging double-figure points: Christian Coleman (12.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg), Jaylen Curry (12.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg), Parsa Fallah (12.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and Isaiah Coleman (10.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg).
- OSU has held each of its first three opponents under 40% from the field. They're shooting just 35.4% collectively.
- A&M-Corpus Christi has won at least 20 games in each of the past four seasons – a program record. The first two came under Lutz and the last two under his former assistant Jim Shaw.
- Lutz took the Islanders to consecutive NCAA tournaments in 2022 and 2023, ending what had been a 15-year NCAA tournament drought. His 2023 team swept the Southland regular season and tournament titles and won the first NCAA tournament game in program history.
- Lutz's 2022-23 A&M-Corpus Christi team was also the last to play in GIA (on Dec. 20, 2022). OSU defeated the Islanders, 81-58.
- OSU is 12-0 all-time against A&M-Corpus Christi (10-0 in Stillwater).
- OSU received a vote in this week's AP Poll -- the program's first since February 2023.
- The Cowboys were predicted to finish 12th out of 16 teams in the Big 12 Conference race.
- OSU is 16-4 inside GIA under Lutz. The Cowboys have won 12 consecutive non-conference regular season contests on the white maple, dating back to December 2023.
- This is the fourth in a stretch of six OSU home games to start the regular season, continuing Wednesday against South Florida (7 p.m., ESPN+).
Â
Last Time on Cowboy Basketball:
Wednesday, Nov. 12 | OSU 94, Prairie View A&M 67
- Vyctorius Miller scored a career-high 30 and OSU used a pair of extended runs to pull away.
- The Cowboys trailed 15-14 near the midway point of the first half before mounting a 16-3 spurt over a span of less than four minutes.
- OSU led 46-32 at halftime, helped by 18 points from Miller and a commanding 28-13 rebounding margin.
- The Cowboys started the second half with another 22-4 push. They held the Panthers scoreless over the last five minutes in that stretch, which was capped by an Isaiah Coleman steal and dunk to make it a 68-36 game with 12:10 to play.
- The Cowboys finished with a 54-31 rebounding margin and outscored the Panthers 23-5 on second-chances.
- Miller's first career 30-point game came on just 12 shots. He made five three-pointers and 9-of-11 free throws.
Â
More PVAMU Leftovers:
- OSU led Oral Roberts by four points at halftime in the season opener. Since then, the Cowboys have won all five halves by double-digits
- 54 rebounds were the most by a Cowboy team in five years, matching the 54 that they grabbed in a Nov. 25, 2020 win at UTA.
- OSU has reached the 50-rebound plateau twice in the first three games after doing so just once all of last season. The Cowboys entered the weekend ranked 12th nationally at 49.3 per game.
- The OSU bench has outscored its counterpart in all three games, averaging 37.6 points per contest. A year ago the Cowboys ranked 13th nationally at 30.6 points per game.
- The Cowboys have reached the 80-point plateau in each of their first three games this season and are a combined 15-0 under Lutz when doing so.
- OSU hit the 90-point mark for the second time in three games after doing so just once last season.
- Vyctorius Miller became the first Cowboy since Javon Small to score 30. Small had 34 in a Mar. 9, 2024 visit to BYU.
Â
On This Date: Nov. 16:
- 2016 – The Cowboys put 117 points on the scoreboard -- the last of three consecutive 100-point games to open up the 2016-17 season -- in a 45-point rout of New Orleans. They led by 32 at halftime, while setting a school record for first-half productivity (68 points). Six players finished the night in double-figures, led by Leyton Hammonds (15 pts, 13 reb) and 10 Cowboys contributed at least seven points.
Â
The Series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi:
- This is the 13th meeting between the schools and the 11th in Stillwater. OSU leads the series 12-0 with all 12 wins coming by double-digit points.
- The teams first met in 1972, at which time Corpus Christi teams were known as the "Tarpons." The name was officially changed to "Islanders" in the 1990s.
Â
Scouting the Islanders:
- Steve Lutz goes head-to-head with his former team and one of his former proteges.
- Jim Shaw worked two seasons as an assistant coach under Lutz (during which the Islanders advanced to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments). Shaw moved over to the head chair in 2023 when Lutz departed for Western Kentucky.
- Shaw has since led the Islanders to consecutive 20-win seasons and a 26-12 record in Southland Conference play. His 2024 team finished runner-up in the regular season and earned a bid to the CIT, and the 2025 squad tied for fourth-place.
- The Islanders return just three players from last year's group, which finished 20-14 (12-8 SLC).
- Two of those holdovers -- seniors Sheldon Williams (13.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg) and Kam Parker (9.0 ppg) -- lead the team in minutes at 27.1 and 26.9 respectively. The 6-foot-8 Williams pulled down 17 rebounds in the Nov. 6 game at SMU.
- Mason Gibson, a senior transfer from Division II Midwestern State, is one of 10 newcomers who have seen action so far for the Islanders. He's averaging 11.5 points and 2.0 steals per game along with 3.0 threes on 42.9% accuracy.
- Given the ties between Lutz and Shaw, it's no surprise that the Islanders and Cowboys share a common approach to lineups. Per KenPom, reserves accounted for 45% of the Corpus Christi minutes last year (second nationally). OSU was 10th at 42.4%.
- The Islanders opened the season with a win over Division III Trinity (TX) but have since dropped three straight to SMU, Tarleton State and Kansas.
- This will be Corpus Christi's fifth game in a 13-day span to start the season and fourth straight on the road.
Â
Matchup Mashup:
- OSU's Director of Scouting and Analytics, Isaiah "Zeke" Brooks-Sena, and Director of Basketball Operations, Alannah Yeats, were student managers during Steve Lutz's time in Corpus Christi before following him to Western Kentucky in 2023 and to Stillwater a year later.
- Former Cowboys assistant Terrence Rencher is in his second season at A&M-Corpus Christi. He spent three seasons in Stillwater (2021-24) under former head coach Mike Boynton Jr.
- This is the first of two games against Southland Conference opponents on back-to-back weekends. The Cowboys will play host to Nicholls next Saturday.
- OSU is facing its third straight "A&M" school, having previously hosted Texas A&M and Prairie View A&M, but the Cowboys are still four short of a complete set. The other four Division I schools with A&M in their title are: Alabama A&M, East Texas A&M, Florida A&M and Southern University (officially Southern University and A&M College).
Â
Well, this is Awkward:
- Steve Lutz isn't the first OSU head coach to face his former school.
- Four others have done it previously, most recently Eddie Sutton, who swept a four games series from Arkansas between 2000 and 2003. He also split a home-and-home with Creighton in the late 90s.
- Hired in 1934 after a one-year stint at Colorado, Henry Iba would go on to meet the Buffaloes 34 times in a span of 36 seasons with OSU. He also faced his former school, Northwest Missouri State, once on the road in the 1949.
- John Maulbetsch (Phillips) and Paul Hansen (Oklahoma City) round out the list.
Â
A Cowboy win would...
- Make them 4-0 for the first time since the 2020-21 season when Cade Cunningham and company opened with six consecutive victories.
- Extend their all-time series lead over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to 13-0 (11-0 in Stillwater).
- Improve their home record under Steve Lutz to 17-4 (.810), including 9-0 in non-conference regular season contests.
- Boost Lutz's career record to 90-53 in parts of five seasons as a head coach (21-18 at OSU).
- Make them 876-268 all-time in GIA (now in its 88th season), including 308-94 since its 2000 expansion.
- Give them 13 straight non-conference regular season wins inside GIA, dating back to December 2023, and make them 460-60 (.885) all-time.
A Cowboy loss would...
- Be their first in 13 all-time meetings with A&M-Corpus Christi.
- Be their first non-conference regular season home loss since Nov. 30, 2023 against Creighton, snapping a 12-game winning streak.

Up Next: South Florida
Wednesday, Nov. 19 | 7 p.m. CT | ESPN+
- The Cowboys wind down their six-game, season opening homestand next week with games against South Florida (Wednesday) and Nicholls (Saturday).
- The USF Bulls (2-1 heading into Sunday's matchup with Kennesaw State) are picked second in the American Conference.
- First-year head coach Bryan Hodgson is coming off a successful two-year run at Arkansas State, where he compiled a 45-28 record and won the 2025 Sun Belt Conference regular season title.
- This will be just the third ever meeting between the schools. OSU swept a home-and-home series from the Bulls in 2012-13 and 2013-14, winning 61-49 in Stillwater and 93-67 the following year in Tampa.
